What Are Your Favorite Duncan Humbuckers for a L.P.???

Re: What Are Your Favorite Duncan Humbuckers for a L.P.???

Which would be better for hard rock and blues in the bridge... the 59 or Seth Lover?

You can;t go wrong with either, but if you play with a ton of gain, very loudly, and standing near the amp, I'd go with the '59s. The more gain there is, I think you lose some 'specialness' of the Seths, too.

Re: What Are Your Favorite Duncan Humbuckers for a L.P.???

i agree with that last part for sure, i think that goes for most pups. the more gain you use, the more you lose the subtleties between two different paf flavors for example

Re: What Are Your Favorite Duncan Humbuckers for a L.P.???

'59B's are pretty bright and mid scooped. I like them better with a warm magnet. Seth's on the other hand, are great as-is.

Thanks man! I think I'll be sticking to either a set of seths or Seth in neck and pearly gates in bridge. I'm leaning towards the seths I think.

Re: What Are Your Favorite Duncan Humbuckers for a L.P.???

Im a fan of the Pearly Gates/Seths/Antiqs. Ive moved around almost every combo. Turned out I was mostly partial to the Pearly Bridge. And although I LOVE the Pearly neck, I tended to like the Antiq and Seths a little more in the neck pos. One thing I def. noticed. Every guitar had a different characteristic, even with the same combo of Pickups. I assume it was mostly weight, but wood makeup was probably a factor too.

The heaviest (custom Classic) weighs over 10 lbs and sounded the best, to me with a full set of pearlies. The lightest (standard) sounded best with a antiquity in the neck and I may change out the PG bridge for the matching Antiq., but at this time, Im happy with the sounds im getting and honestly, tired of changing pickups. None of these combos ever sounded bad. I just was experimenting. The ES is to die for with the Antiquities.

I ended up with:
1995 Les Paul Classic prem+ (9.5 lbs) - w SD Pearly (b) & Antiq (n)
2008 Les Paul Standard + (7.9 lbs) - w SD Pearly (b) & Antiq (n)
2016 Les Paul Studio (8.5 lbs) - SD SD Pearly (b) & Seth (n)
2014 Les Paul Custom Classic flower pot (10.7 lbs) - SD Pearly set
2012 Les Paul Deluxe Goldtop (8.7 lbs)- Lindy Fralin P-90s
2007 ES 339 (6.8 lbs)- SD Antiquities

Re: What Are Your Favorite Duncan Humbuckers for a L.P.???

What tones are you wanting from the bridge PU?

I usually use my bridge pickup more when I'm useing distortion... when I'm playing clean I like going to the neck or put the selector in the middle to use both. I like my neck to be thick and brighti want the neck and bridge to work nice together that's why I usually like useing matching sets and usually not mixing them up. I want the bridge to work good with the distortion... I try useing not too dial too much distortion in though I like my notes to still be clear and be able to make them out. It's a Les Paul Signature T I'll be putting them in. What do you think?

I installed a set of Whole Lotta Humbuckers on my sig. T and couldn't be happier. I also use the bridge with distortion and throw the neck in when playing cleans.
The stock 57+ was a bit too harsh, the WLH fixed that. It has a bit more body and the high end sounds rounder and sweeter. Neck is great too. I have the bridge uncovere and the neck covered.

Really? To be honest I didn't even really consider them... Did you keep them split or get rid of the push/pull pots?

Re: What Are Your Favorite Duncan Humbuckers for a L.P.???

PG set
Anything plus a distortion bridge
PG / Custom

Re: What Are Your Favorite Duncan Humbuckers for a L.P.???

My favourite Duncan p'up sets on a LP are:

* Budget: A3n/A2b-modded, nickel-covered '59 set, aka "Vintage Blues" set

* Arguably "best": fully-charged A3n/A2b-modded Antiquity set.

* Best stock p'up set: Seth Lover set

Only requirement: having a harness with 500K pots for both volume and tone. I favour linear taper for volume and audio/logaritmic taper for tone.

Custom in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck. But I'm seriously considering an Alpha and Omega set. I hear similarities in the demos and I'm curious.

I agree splits are of limited use, which is why I like spin-a-split much better. Instead of being limited to two coils or one, one extreme or the other, you can dial in any amount of the 2nd coil, to adjust both EQ and volume where you want it. Far more versatile and useful.

Yea I don't use them much either... I never checked what kind of pots came in them though.. are they 300k or 500k? I assumed they were 500k.
