Re: What are your impressions of the YJM pickups?
I have only used the neck version, in my opinion it is more versatile than what you would think based by being Yngwie's signature. Yes these really shine on high gain but I like them with mild overdrive too and clean is very nice (not like an SSL-1 but I like it), auto-split and combined with regular SSL-1 in the middle gives me a noise canceling usable quack. A few months ago I took it out of my HSS strat and put a Custom Stack Plus STK-S6 just to compare (again, I had used it already) and I like the YJM Fury better, but the Custom Stack Plus is very good too. I have combined my FJM Fury neck with a JB in bridge too and imho those two can live together. I will put the YJM Fury neck back and put it with the stock Dimarzio H8 (kind of Paf Pro?) as I want a bit more treble from the bridge.
I had the original DiMarzio HS-4 before, that was kind of unusable for my HSS guitar, I adjusted the neck pickup height to have the tone I wanted to match with the DiMarzio H8 bridge on high gain but when switching to clean the neck was too loud, who knows. When the Duncan came out I tried it with my JB already installed and imho these two are way more balanced. Tonewise I would say the Dimarzio is fatter so less versatile, the Duncan is not that fat sounding and that makes it more versatile and usable for me.
Edit: The sound of the attack of the FYM Fury neck when you pick the string really makes you wanna do less legato and more alternate picking, that sounds super cool when playing around frets 12-5, its attack sounds better than the Custom Stack Plus and is very similar to the old DiMarzio.
