what are your thoughts on basswood guitars?

Re: what are your thoughts on basswood guitars?

I love how it sounds with active pickups, enough so I'm putting Blackouts in my basswood 7 string Ibanez RG 7421

Re: what are your thoughts on basswood guitars?

My Ibanez sounds nice and fat, once I put the right pickups in it. Acoustically it's great. It could use a bit more sparkle, but I'm not complaining! It's a great sound. It's a thicker, darker sound than my Strat which is made of Agathis.

(Feel free to point and laugh. I like how it sounds!)

I tend to believe some folks diss basswood not only because of what was sold as basswood in the 80s, but also because of the setup usually found in most "shredder" guitars. Drop the action in my Ibanez and it sounds dead. Easy to play, but very percussive/thin sounding. No depth. Raise it a bit and the lows and mids come to life, along with a lot of sustain and thickness!

The MIJ Fender's are made of Baswood Poplar. I hear good and bad from Poplar yet MIJ are great guitars.

Poplar and Basswood are two different woods, with two different sounds.

MIJ Fenders have come in ash and alder as well.

Re: what are your thoughts on basswood guitars?

I have a basswood guitar. It doesn't have as much mid as my other guitars. I just don't like how it dings so easily. I can flick the guitar with a pencil and now it would have a knick in it.

Re: what are your thoughts on basswood guitars?

I have four guitars claimed by their manufacturers to be made of basswood, and none of them sound anything alike. In fact, any two of them resonate in ways that are as different as any two woods you can name.

Yeah, basswood is something that is so broad you have to try it out for yourself.
