For me:
Peter Green:
'59 Les Paul with Neck PAF out of phase and a Fender Showman;
Eric Clapton (during his early years):
Gibson '64 Les Pal SG (that's what they called an SG back then) and a Fender Showman (Marshalls as well)
Mark Knopfler: '61 Stratocaster and Fender Twin Reverb.

Re: What artists have been most influential to you and what gear did/do they use

J. M. W. Turner - oil on canvas.

BTW, the classic early MK sound is a brown Tolex Fender Vibrolux Amp.

Re: What artists have been most influential to you and what gear did/do they use

I'll play (in no order)

John McLaughlin: PRS, into a Twin Tube pedal, direct to the board (or giant Marshalls early on)
Steve Morse: Ernie Ball into signature ENGL
Steve Howe: Many guitars (Strat/LPs/ES-175s/ES-Artist) into Fender Dual Showmans
Robert Fripp: LP Custom, cheap fuzzbox/volume pedal into a HiWatt (now he uses an extensive rack system)
Allan Holdsworth: signature Carvin/Steinberger/DeLap guitar into 6 Yamaha Magic Stomps into whatever amp is around

Re: What artists have been most influential to you and what gear did/do they use

I gotta say Mark Knopfler has been a huge influence over me the last ten plus years. But as I've searched for gear to hit those tones, I realize that I need to give up the pick and work my fingers and that is helping tremendously. His touch is his tone. Taken me a long time to even figure any of that out.

Re: What artists have been most influential to you and what gear did/do they use

Angus: SG, Marshall
Slash: LP, Marshall
EVH: Super Strats/EBMM/Wolfgang, Matshall/5150

Re: What artists have been most influential to you and what gear did/do they use

I recently got turned on to Alvin Seville.

I think he uses helium to get his sound.

Re: What artists have been most influential to you and what gear did/do they use

For actual influence (ie..not just inspiration..) :

James Murphy...I think he used Ibanez's with EMG's into a JCM 800

Andy LaRocque....BC Rich guitars..Marshall Valvestate in the old days..

Gary Moore..he's used everything lol..

Angus Young - We all know his gear

Re: What artists have been most influential to you and what gear did/do they use

For me (and especially lately) it's Jimi and his chain of influence, including Gilmour, Trower, SRV, Frusciante and McCready and darn near half the Strat players out there like Phillip Sayce, etc.

Strats into Fenders and Marshall (style) with Fuzz, Uni-Vibe and Wah, add in the OD from SRV and Delay from Gilmour. Secondary influence for heavier sounds is EVH with a modded Strat, hotter Marshall and Phase/Flanger.

More importantly, I've been incorporating the playing styleof that lineage, using the thumb-over technique and partial G chord fretting. Of course I'm still awful at it, but having fun every time I play!

Hey I am a big Turner fan also Alfred Sisley and Ravel.

I think MK used a Twin on the recording of Sultans of Swing.

Re: What artists have been most influential to you and what gear did/do they use

James Hetfield- EMG 60/81 equipped Explorers into various Mesa and Marshalls.

Matt Heafy- EMG 85/81 Les Pauls into 5150's.

Claudio Sanchez- BKP Nailbomb equipped Explorers into various different amps.

John Petrucci- DMZ Ibanez/ Music Man guitars into Mesas.

Re: What artists have been most influential to you and what gear did/do they use

I'm really digging Mark Mortons sound for lamb of god, he plays mesa MK 4/5 and royal atlantics, used to have 59's in his guitar, now his signature DiMa PUs

What about Chet Atkins?

Yes, I am and I think your link supports it (sort of).
"There is no evidence that this amp was played on the Sultans of Swing version of Dire Straits’ first album (recorded in February 1978). Possibly different amps were used here (Twin Reverb, Jazz Chorus, and the Vibrolux). In about May 1978 Knopfler started to play Fender Twin Reverbs on stage. The Vibrolux reapperad with the Notting Hillbillies and is still frequently used these days in Knopfler’s British Grove studio."

However, I have read elsewhere (can't remember where) that stated specifically he used a Twin on S of S. No matter a Vibrolux is 1/2 a Twin, kinda.

Re: What artists have been most influential to you and what gear did/do they use

Slash. Gibson Les Paul and Marshall Jubilee.

Dave Mustaine. Dean Signature models and Marshall.

James Hetfield. ESP and...dunno.

Re: What artists have been most influential to you and what gear did/do they use

James Hetfield: EMG, Marshall/Mesa and explorers. Can't get better than that!

Max Cavalera: Duncan Distortion. Amps probably Mesa.

Dimebag: Love Pantera songs more, but I like his tone better in Damageplan.

Jerry Cantrell: Marshall and JB. Yeah!

Dave Mustain: Marshall and JB.

Re: What artists have been most influential to you and what gear did/do they use

It was Clapton's first solo album that heavily influenced me to buy my1960 Strat back in 1972 for $150. That led to the Music Man Sabres and then the G&Ls, both major improvements.

Billy Gibbons and Santana made me want a Les Paul, and Larry Carlton and Lee Ritenour the 335s. My H.S. Choir director and several buddies in high school had Martin D-28s, and that's caused insatiable lust ever since.

The Boogies...I don't know. Carlton, Santana, Stones, Ritenour et.al. of course. But mostly it was the amp itself. I had a Bandmaster that was stolen, then my SUNN Solos for a long time, and then an Acoustic Control, and then more Fenders and Marshalls. So when I was the Mark III head in a pawn shop priced WAY below book (they thought it was a .50 Calibre), I had money in my pocket and simply took a leap of faith and bought it on the spot. One of the best gear decisions I've ever made...hell, one of the best life decisions! Been so happy with them, found the tones I'd been looking for, for a LONG time. Pure joy! Good place to be in when you've finally found your tone.

Joe Perry. I've been a fan since I was about 8 years old. He's used so much different production line and custom gear over the years that it's tough to name it all.

Dave Murray and Adrian Smith They've been using Fender and Jackson guitars with DiMarzio pickups through Marshall amps for ages. Adrian uses an old Gibson SG at times. Now Dave's starting to use Victory Amps and Adrian used a Blackstar HT-5 on the new Book Of Souls album.

James Hetfield ESP, Gibson, and James Trussart guitars through Mesa Road Kings and various Marshall amps.

Ace FrehleyGibson Les Pauls through Marshall amps, or sometimes a Fender Princeton or Peavey 5150.

Brad WhitfordLike Joe, too numerous to mention. Lately, he's been raving about his Fender Eric Johnson Strat with Dimarzio Area 61 pickups and his EBMM Reflex Game Changer.

Re: What artists have been most influential to you and what gear did/do they use

I will write a few that I know of offhand. I am not fanatical about learning the exact gear of my guitar heroes, so it might be a lame list. Most of these guys used various guitars and amps, but these instruments stick out to me when I think of them.

Steve Cropper – Esquires and Teles with Fender Harvards in the studio. Other amps too, later (and live).

Chuck Berry – ES-350T, ES-335/345/355, various Fender amps

Peter Green – Les Paul Standard, unsure of amp (though you seem to know something about it – I always assumed he used some sort of early Marshall)

Mick Taylor – SG, 345, Les Paul Deluxe, Les Paul Standard, Fender Twin Reverb, various Ampegs

Carlos Santana – Les Paul Special, Princeton Boogie

Frank Zappa – SG

Pete Townshend – Everything under the sun, for both guitars and amps. Ricks, SG Specials, and a Gretsch Chet Atkins stand out.

Freddie King – Les Paul P90 Standard, ES-355, unsure of amps.

Albert King – original-style Flying V (the good looking kind IMO), unsure of amps

Keith Richards – Les Paul Standard, Custom, and Junior, plus various weirdo guitars early on, and Teles later on. Unsure of amps, though he used many, including Vox and, later, Ampegs.

Mick Ralphs – Les Paul Jr., unsure of amps

Mick Ronson – Les Paul Custom, unsure of amps

Paul Kossoff – Les Paul Standard, I'm guessing Marshall amps

Malcolm Young – Gretsch Jet Firebird, Marshalls

Robbie Krieger – red SGs, Twin Reverbs

Wayne Kramer – late '60's Strat most famously, but all sorts of stuff: 335, Les Paul, Firebird, Tele, Esquire. Vox AC-100's and Marshall Super Leads.

Fred Smith – Mosrite, Gretsch Tennessean, Vox AC-100's, Marshall Super Leads, Fender Super Reverb.

Johnny Ramone – Mosrite, Marshall

Johnny Thunders – Les Paul Special and Junior, not sure of amps.

James Williamson – '69 Les Paul Custom, Vox AC-30, Marshalls

OK, brain hurts. Might think of more later.
