Re: What artists have been most influential to you and what gear did/do they use
I will write a few that I know of offhand. I am not fanatical about learning the exact gear of my guitar heroes, so it might be a lame list. Most of these guys used various guitars and amps, but these instruments stick out to me when I think of them.
Steve Cropper – Esquires and Teles with Fender Harvards in the studio. Other amps too, later (and live).
Chuck Berry – ES-350T, ES-335/345/355, various Fender amps
Peter Green – Les Paul Standard, unsure of amp (though you seem to know something about it – I always assumed he used some sort of early Marshall)
Mick Taylor – SG, 345, Les Paul Deluxe, Les Paul Standard, Fender Twin Reverb, various Ampegs
Carlos Santana – Les Paul Special, Princeton Boogie
Frank Zappa – SG
Pete Townshend – Everything under the sun, for both guitars and amps. Ricks, SG Specials, and a Gretsch Chet Atkins stand out.
Freddie King – Les Paul P90 Standard, ES-355, unsure of amps.
Albert King – original-style Flying V (the good looking kind IMO), unsure of amps
Keith Richards – Les Paul Standard, Custom, and Junior, plus various weirdo guitars early on, and Teles later on. Unsure of amps, though he used many, including Vox and, later, Ampegs.
Mick Ralphs – Les Paul Jr., unsure of amps
Mick Ronson – Les Paul Custom, unsure of amps
Paul Kossoff – Les Paul Standard, I'm guessing Marshall amps
Malcolm Young – Gretsch Jet Firebird, Marshalls
Robbie Krieger – red SGs, Twin Reverbs
Wayne Kramer – late '60's Strat most famously, but all sorts of stuff: 335, Les Paul, Firebird, Tele, Esquire. Vox AC-100's and Marshall Super Leads.
Fred Smith – Mosrite, Gretsch Tennessean, Vox AC-100's, Marshall Super Leads, Fender Super Reverb.
Johnny Ramone – Mosrite, Marshall
Johnny Thunders – Les Paul Special and Junior, not sure of amps.
James Williamson – '69 Les Paul Custom, Vox AC-30, Marshalls
OK, brain hurts. Might think of more later.
