Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Jimmy Herring, Guthrie Trapp, and Vince Gill are probably my most "influential" guitar players. I don't have much in common gear wise with Warren. I like old Fender amps, just like Derek and Jimmy, but I can't say that I get much else from them either.

Guthrie and Vince are another story. I prefer Telecasters, and like to run an amp in the 20 watt range (not sure what Vince is using, but Guthrie prefers Princetons and Deluxes).

I've never been big on modeling my gear after another player. I pick up what I like to use and what compliments my sound. I might occasionally get turned on to a specific piece of gear because some one I like uses one, but it's not very often.

I started playing in the late '80s, and by then EVH style tapping and diminished Yngwie licks were totally cliched, so I never pursued them directly as part of my bag o' tricks. Vai was the rising star of that era, and while my playing is far more conventional than his, I really love his endless scalar runs and VaiSweeps (I call them Rakes.......listen to the lead on Shy Boy), and when I'm goofing off, his slurred lines and the occasional whammy inflection. Petrucci is a kind of super version of me, who very clearly picked up the influences from these masters as he was learning.

I must say, if there is a current band that covers what I aspire to be, the closet is probably Porcupine Tree on In Absentia, although with a bit more leads thrown in. Love the vibe of that entire album. :cool2: Like them, I am not the kind of person who would ever be likely to do what it takes to have mainstream fame, but I'd much rather look back and my catalog and be proud, and have a strong cult following.

Yeah, that's right about the time I got going with the guitar as well. I bought my first guitar (an Ibanez Destroyer) in 1990, though I'd been messing around for a year or so before that. Cliched or not, dude's like Yngwie/Evh were still boggling my mind at the time (& still do) haha..though I did'nt even vaguely consider them influential (they were'nt on the same planet :laugh2:). My early guitar influences were all power chords & thrash bands. Kreator's "Tormentor" was the first song I taught myself to play :p In the beginning it was all about finding stuff I liked that was easy enough for me to play..so a lot of pentatonic based/bluesy stuff lead-wise (Alvin Lee, Angus Young, Iommi, Page, Gary Moore..) and a lot of thrash/death/doom metal rhythm-wise.

I like early Petrucci/Dream Theater a lot (especially Images & Words/Awake/Seasons/Metropolis..) but they don't do much for me these days...
