What bridge pickup for les paul?

Picked up a nice les paul, and I'm not really digging the burstbucker pro bridge pickup. It's a bit too bassy for my setup. I play hard rock/metal through a 6505+ into a recto 4x12. The guitar has a heavy mid presence and a sparkly type of top end unplugged. I am a jb fan, but I'm thinking it would be too mid heavy in this guitar. Any suggestions?

Re: What bridge pickup for les paul?

If we are going with Duncan, a Custom might be what you want. Tight bass, screaming highs, not too many mids. If that is a little too sporty for you, then you can do a mag swap. By adding an A5 mag instead of the ceramic, you get a C% - less mids, less output, and not as "ceramic"

I'll be hard-rocking a Custom in a Cadillac a lot of this evening though. Excellent hard rock / metal pup for a Les Paul.

Seriously - Custom.

Re: What bridge pickup for les paul?

It's funny how I can answer others questions about pickups than I can decide the same for myself.

Ace is right, for a mid output HB, the Custom in your LP should be great. It's described as a PAF on steroids. About 14k. That is normally too hot for me. I love the CC, which is a Custom with an A2 mag, but way too mid heavy for a Lester. The JB will be too nasally in your LP.

I would suggest a 59' bridge or possibly a SNS bridge for your LP, or maybe a WLH bridge. The trouble is in this output range, you go from about 9k and then jump into the Custom range. I haven't tried one yet, but the Custom/59' Hybrid might be just the ticket for your needs.

Sorry I'm not more conclusive, but it all depends on how hot you want your bridge. Are you going to run the BB Pro in the neck?

Re: What bridge pickup for les paul?

Thanks for the input so far guys. I like a higher output bridge pup. The custom is pretty intriguing, I've tried all of em apart from the sh-5 so far in other guitars. Don't really know how I missed it lol. It has a stock 490 in the neck position, and it sounds pretty killer, so I think I'll keep it there for now. So, I guess I'm looking for something that is close to the jb output wise, with out the high mid spike. The sh5 is tops for now I think, unless you all change my mind lol

Re: What bridge pickup for les paul?

The nice thing a about either the Custom or the C5 is that a simple magnet swap will give you the other pickup if you don't like the one you chose. If it were me and I wanted a higher output bridge it would be the Custom first. Ace is a great person to listen to on this, since he is in a regular gigging band playing old school hard rock and metal. With your amp the Custom will do EVERYTING you want it to do.

I found the C5 too mid scooped and bright when I had it in a Les Paul, but that was YEARS ago. If I wanted to go that route, I'd go UOA5 or RC UOA5. That could be perfect.

You have a 490 in the neck position?
Put a 498T in the bridge spot!
Epiphone Les Paul Prophesy's come with the 498T/490R combo.

I really liked the 490, but it lacked the output that I like for soloing. I do a lot of legato and arpeggiated stuff, and needed something with a little more gain.

While shopping for pickups, I remembered that I really wanted to try the fishman stuff, so I went plumb off the deep end and picked up a set of fishman fluence modern humbuckers, and I'm pretty happy with them so far.

I've never tried the Fishman pickups. How they working out for you?

Re: What bridge pickup for les paul?

I've only had about an hour with them, but I like them so far. The bridge pickup is really tight, and has good mids and highs, not piercing like I thought they might be in my les paul. Very articulate! You can hear every note in chords, with both the neck and bridge pickups. The neck pickup is smooth, fat, not boomy, and has the perfect amount of cut for the way that I play.

Right now I have a slinkier set of strings than normal on it, and my palm mutes are kinda funky sounding, but I think my usual strings will remedy that. I'm very happy with them so far, and I haven't really messed with voice 2 much at all.

I installed them with the stock wiring, meaning a high frequency tilt, and voice selection on separate push pull potentiometers. I cant really tell a difference when I engage the high frequency tilt, so I think I will wire it to the coil tap.
