What Cable for Shure SM48 Mic

I want to start recording some guitar and vocals on my computer. I'm looking into picking up a cheap tascam US-100 Audio interface and a Shure SM48 mic, but I'm completey new to recording and mics. The mic does not come with a cable and I'm not sure what kind I should get, XLR or 1/4? The Tascam has an input for both. Forgive my ignorance, but I have no clue.

The SM48 is an XLR. You need the female XLR on one end of your cable, and the male XLR on the other.

Or you can get an XLR to 1/4" cable. Since the Tascam unit has an XLR Input, then it can do what the mic needs on that end. Otherwise, you'd need the 1/4" end or some sort of mic preamp.

How, how good the mic preamp in the Tascam is, I cannot say. You might be better off with an XLR-to-1/4" cable in the long run, or a line transformer.

Thanks!

I've managed to find one that comes with a free cable and stand on American Musical Supply. Judging by the picture it seems to be male and female XLR. I'm just fooling around and learning the basics of recording so I assume this will be fine for now.

Nice start, I hope you do well on your recording, I am going to buy some stuff today and I wanted to have my own recording to.

The 48 is a lecture stand mic isn't it?

It's an in-house lower priced clone of the SM58:
