A couple of my guitars fretboards are a little dirty....what cleaning solution can you recommend?

Will any furniture polish work without hurting the wood?

Lemon oil :)

I bought pure lemon oil from a health food store. A couple of drops at a time on a Q-tip, rub until it gets dirty and use another one. Then I let some sit on the board for a couple of minutes and wipe it dry with an old t-shirt.

When I questioned a couple of manufacturers (Godin, Schecter) they both said lemon oil. Just don't get the furniture polish kind that can have petroleum products in it.

+ 1 on the lemon oil, just stop by any good guitar store and they'll have some.

Cleaning: 0000 steel wool and Naphtha (lighter fluid)

Conditioning: Lemon oil.

Rubbing the lemon oil into the board before cleaning it (in other words, attempting to use lemon oil as a cleaner) will only serve to let the lemon oil take some of the dirt in with it.

Side note: it´s not usually petroleum products that cause problems with the wood (case in point Naphtha is an ideal cleaner and is about as petroleum product as you can get), its usually silicones such as those found in lemon pledge and most furniture polishes. These silicones also make future repairs way more hassle (and thereby more expensive) than they already are ;)

Well, if you just want to clean it a bit you could use dan erlewine's moist breath technique.

Hah, that is for the body of a guitar to get a spot off of it. It might be good for a nitro laquered maple fretboard though.

Read Zerbs post he is right on. My method is very similar.

#1 Buff the board and frets with 0000 steal wool.

#2 Clean it thoughly with lighter fluid.

#3 I condition with this product,
