What can you tell me about Eric Johnson?

I saw an Eric Johnson DVD at Best Buy today. It's one of those Austin City Limits recordings. I was wondering what category this guy fits into. Progressive Rock? Blues?

I know he plays a Strat and I love watching people play Strats but I like to hear distortion too. Does he play clean or does he balls it up?

Re: What can you tell me about Eric Johnson?

He's in the "He plays everything better than you" category. In fact, better than most every other guitar player for that matter

Buy anything from Austin with Eric Johnson. You won't be disappointed.

I'd say he's a progressive rock/blues/country/jazz player. Ok - that didn't help. He's Eric Johnson. He's a pretty unique voice/style. He plays some jazzed rock tunes. He plays some rocked blues tunes. He does some great pop-progressive stuff. He has a distinct Stevie Ray / Jimi Hendrix influence. And IU really mean influence. You can tell he has listened to, played and digetsted everything they have ever done. Yet he doesn't steal one lick.

As for distortion, he seeks that elusive violin creamy distoriton. He uses a triple amp setup. Clean, Clean plus dirt, and really dirty, or something like that. He is an uber-tone meister. He runs a range from clean to maga-dirt, but always clear and toneful.

He shreds and he is a tasty phraser. Get it.

He's a guitar players guitar player, in much the same sense Jeff Beck is a guitar player for other guitar players. I'm not saying that he plays much the same as Beck though.

I saw him live years ago and the girl I took said something like: " well that was a lot like a classical piano recital but on electric guitar." I thought she summed it up.

Re: What can you tell me about Eric Johnson?

He's a great technician and probably more anal retentive about his tone than this whole forum combined, but IMO it pays off wonderfully.

OMG - have you guys actually listened to Ah Via Musicom? There are some awesome songs on there!!!!

Disregard these haters. They are jealous of his tone, his chops AND his song writing skills!!!

I, for one, was not hating. I very much enjoy his material.

EJ is awesome, plain and simple. Look him up on Youtube.

If you dig kickass guitar players, you'll probably enjoy his playing. The Austin City Limits show they rerun from time to time is particularly good. His songs on the G3 cd from whatever year that was are great, too.

Re: What can you tell me about Eric Johnson?

Eric Johnson is fantastic.
His music isn't always my style, but I can appreciate his playing anyday of the week.

Re: What can you tell me about Eric Johnson?

Eric Johnson is #1. He is my primary influence. He is a tone surgeon. He is a perfectionist. He makes the most beautiful sounds with the guitar, that you can make. He is a very quiet, humble guy. He mixes many styles of music together

Re: What can you tell me about Eric Johnson?

Eric Johnson is THE Master of tone. the man has his own style and near perfect if not perfect technique. the obvious piece you want to check out is Cliffs of Dover it's like his master piece...desert rose is not bad, but he does not have a great singing voice, but when you can play like that, no one is coming to hear you sing anyways.

Re: What can you tell me about Eric Johnson?

I am alittle with TGWIF here...I lump him in with the rest of those "new" guys.....(as he is not new, since I have heard his stuff since the 80s)
Well he can play...but it just does not spark much intrest...have a few albums though....sometimes I can take a tune or two, other times it just ticks me off as polite dullard perfect not very raw and all that...;)
Anyways who gives a sh!t??
If you like it, then it is cool, if not...that is cool too!

Re: What can you tell me about Eric Johnson?

I think he's amazing. He goes in the same category (for me) as Steve Morse, Vai, etc. Impecable tone, exemplary chops, the entire package.

Re: What can you tell me about Eric Johnson?

Great, tasteful player with unique tone and phrasing.

Insists on singing on 1/2 of his songs - as if anyone wants to hear him sing.

Has a long history of wearing rather regrettable jackets.

Is rumored to have ears so finely tuned that he can hear if one of the pedals on his giant pedalboard has too much charge.

Has rather foppish hair.

Re: What can you tell me about Eric Johnson?

To be fair, his singing leaves a bit to be desired and some of the jackets are tragic. To be fair, we have never heard Christian sing or seen his jackets.

Re: What can you tell me about Eric Johnson?

Good point, but to be fair, Christian could dress like Napoleon Bonaparte and bray like an impacted mule and it would not do much to help Eric Johnson in either regard.

Re: What can you tell me about Eric Johnson?

He's always been a precious little perfectionist with underwhelming material, but a perennial geewhiz darling of the guitar player mags. Hype...

+1. He needs a vocalist. But his playing is great & inspired. He's on a par with Robben Ford. They can do everything well, without the slighest mistake. And both are at a much more sophisticated level than that halfwit egotistic Vai.

Re: What can you tell me about Eric Johnson?

i am going to be a dissenter against the naysayers about his singing ... i think he has very good pitch control (no autotune trickery), use of dynamics, and above all, integrity in his singing ... he sings in his natural voice, not some affectation ... he sings with emotional honesty ... i will concede that he doesnt do 'raw' in his singing and i actually kinda chuckled the first time i heard him sing 'red house' - the man has no swagger and trying to sing a swagger tune just didnt work ... but i think 'desert rose' or 'high landrons' or others like those sound exactly as they should and his voice fits the material

and he is a complete mofo on guitar
