What can you tell me about this Squire Affinity?

So I was at a local GC just dinkin around and happened to see this. It is in like new condition and loaded with Duncans. Looks like 2 cool rails except the blades are a little different between them. The blades of one look like they are ground and sharp edged and on the other one they are more rounded and shiny. Any ideas? The bridge HB can't tell what model it is. The neck has a slight V shape and feels good. It is fairly heavy but not to heavy. The body is made of 5 pieces but looks good, not sure what it is made of. It is not ash, that I am quite sure of. Mite be Alder but not sure. It sounds good acoustically and through an amp and plays pretty good. Fit and finish are very good, neck is tight in pocket. It is priced at $99.99. Don't know if it comes with a case.
What can you guys tell me about it? Thinking about grabbing it....
Thanks, John

A well-used Duncan humbucker is $60 and for an extra $40 you get a guitar and two more Duncans. Decisions, decisions.

How did it sound? If it plays in tune, I'd be inclined to get it and sell a couple of the pickups to pay for the guitar and use the guitar for wiring experiments with other pickups I have laying around.

Re: What can you tell me about this Squire Affinity?

Kind of what I was thinking. Ya it sounds good and I have a chrome OFR I can put on it if I want, plus it would be good to have a guitar tuned down to E flat. This will sound funny but, I have never bot an electric guitar before. Only built them. Still need to finish THE BUILD!

Re: What can you tell me about this Squire Affinity?

I'd grab it without even thinking, if it doesn't play right you can always flip it and make some profit.

Re: What can you tell me about this Squire Affinity?

A nobrainer!!

The pups alone are worth more than the price of the entire guitar. Anything that isn't perfect about it can be corrected.

If you end up not liking it, send it to me...I'll make a player out of it.

Re: What can you tell me about this Squire Affinity?

Judging by the top photograph, the humbucker has G spaced polepieces. DC resistance meter readings and/or the ID sticker on the baseplate should identify the precise model.

+1 for grabbing the guitar first, deciding which parts you want to keep then flipping the rest. Worse case scenario, you offer the Squier as an unfinished project and make back most of your outlay.

Alternatively, if you ever buy a Fender MiM or CiI HSS Stratocaster, swap the SD and Fender pickups between the guitars, list the Squier as "upgraded".

NOTE: Squier MIC pickguards are of a slightly different outline to the majority of genuine and replica versions. For the swap idea, the Affinity 'guard will have to stay on the Affinity guitar.

Re: What can you tell me about this Squire Affinity?

All you guys are absolutely right. IT IS/ WAS A NO BRAINER! I went back and got it. Tried to get it for $90, but they just got it in so that was a no go. Can't blame a guy for trying. It has a SCR-1N in the neck, a SHR-1N in the mid, and a SH-4 in the bridge. All else is 100% stock. Need to tweak the T-rod a touch and file the nut slightly, slots a little high and to narrow. All quick and easy fixes. It plays and sounds good. Will probably leave it as is for a while, then change out pots and switch and try some different switching and wiring options. If I put the OFR in it I will make a new neck with ether a Jackson like peg head or a reverse Tele peg head.

Re: What can you tell me about this Squire Affinity?

Rad fun.

I actually saw a duncan listed on ebay the other day that came with a free guitar. ha

Re: What can you tell me about this Squire Affinity?

Turns out the body is Agathis and it was made in Indonesia by Cort in 2012.

Re: What can you tell me about this Squire Affinity?

That is good news. Now, how thick is the body? This will have a bearing on your replacement vibrato options.

Re: What can you tell me about this Squire Affinity?

Wow! You got a new-style Cool Rails neck, Hot Rails middle and JB in the bridge. Holy free pups, Batman!

Re: What can you tell me about this Squire Affinity?

Thanks guys. Ya I was pretty stoked! I was about to take off to go back and get it when my Wife got home. I mean, I was ready to bolt out the dour when she comes in talking on the phone....WORK STUFF! So I was polite and waited for her to get off the phone.....30 minutes later. In the mean time I'm all getting in a panic! LOL...got to laugh at my self about that. So she gets off the phone and I tell her I was going to go get a guitar, and we got to go right now! So she gets ready (we were also going out for dinner), we get in the car to head over there and she asks how much. I tell her $100. She looks at me and ses....Wow I thought you were going to say $1000! Then she asks why I didn't just get it when I was there. LOL. I DON'T KNOW.....
Ya Funk, I didn't think about the thickness till you said that. It is 1.6". I usually make my bodies 1.7" to 1.75" thick. But I like my strings a ways off the body and my Floyds to be full floating so it should be OK.

Re: What can you tell me about this Squire Affinity?

Check the string spacing at the nut, twelfth and last frets. It may be narrower than a typical American Fender guitar. Hence, the string spacing of an OFR may run the two E strings uncomfortably close to the edges of the fingerboard.

My own choice would be to simply block the Sung-Il vibrato against the body and play sans twangbar. My second choice would be a Kahler flatmount vibrato and locking 'heads.

Re: What can you tell me about this Squire Affinity?

Look at it this way, you bought three duncan pickups at half-ish price and got a free guitar!

The cavity looks like a a HSH or swimming pool.

Possibilities are endless!

Tinker with it!

Re: What can you tell me about this Squire Affinity?

The heal width is the same as a standard Fender and the nut with is 1.66" so no problem there either. If I were to put a different vibrato on it I would use either an OFR or a Gotoh FR and I would be making a new neck with a 1.71" nut width and an angled heal to get the proper string height (without shimming the neck) for the bridge to be full floating. I do not like Kahler flat mount bridges, I installed a lot of them back in the day, and never cared for how they felt or played. Just my preference. I have to many things I want/need to do to be doing anything other than experimenting with different wiring options on this guitar and playing it.
I need to finish THE BUILD...you know, the one that has been going on FOREVER! LOL. And I want to build another one of the same design out of Swamp Ash with a Douglas Fir neck. Plus I have 2 other designs I need to finish working up and build, and I have an 1987 ZL-1000 Kaw I need to finish rebuilding the carbs and get going. I had started to do that and then my Dad died, and I have been putting it off for the last 2 years. I need to get that don. It would be a big relief to get it don and be out there again burning up the pavement.

Re: What can you tell me about this Squire Affinity?

Sorry to hear about your dad. Mine also died about 2 years ago. Hope you get that Z running soon...winter is approaching.

Re: What can you tell me about this Squire Affinity?

Get rid of the neck and upgrade the tuners... You'll have yourself one monster player guitar. I say this because I had similiar guitar for my daughter, she left it against the wall and it kept warping the neck because the wood was so soft. A MightyMite neck can be bought for less than $100 and be better than a Squier. The Squier neck can be sold for a bit of profit too, $40 maybe $50.

Re: What can you tell me about this Squire Affinity?

This forum knows I love me a good project. Nice snag! Can't wait to see what comes out of it
