What caps to use with Slash AIIps?

Got a wicked bug for some Sweet tone checking out utoob clips and then Slash on Monday night football. Not really trying cop Slash's sound, but just want that sweet thick tone outta my LP. So, gonna try some slash AIIps.
Im assuming I should run 500k pots. What caps would you recommend? I usually run .022 orange drops..

Re: What caps to use with Slash AIIps?

I installed the RS Guitarworks upgrade kit with my Slash AIIps, which came with higher tolerance CTS pots, as well as Jensen caps designed differently for the neck and bridge pickups.

I did alot of research on the caps used in the Slash Les Paul. Gibson claims they're using Bumblebee caps, but guys on the Les Paul Forum dismantled some of Gibson's caps and found they were fake, cheaper caps with a fake cover to look like Bumblebees.

It just got too hard to track down which ones were real, so I just went with the RS Guitarworks kit with Jensen caps that were custom made for RS Guitarworks. They sound great

Try an .01cap

Tom Anderson uses that value and discovering that was a revelation for me.

Listen to my You Tube clip of Black Magic woman to hear his tone cap in use on the bridge humbucker.

I've just installed the same value cap to my JB loaded Musicman with identical results.

thanks guys!
Wolf, listened to a bunch of your clips the other night and they were great!

Re: What caps to use with Slash AIIps?

Either the .01 or .022 work great. .022 will give more effect as the tone pot is rolled off. I also usually use the .022 orange drops, but occassionally use .01 if I only want to roll off the very highs and keep the upper mids intact.

Thanks for letting me know what the diff would be! Sounds like the .22 takes more out accross the sweep.

My only hesitation is the lack of 4 conductors..

Re: What caps to use with Slash AIIps?

IMO the lower output PAF buckers don't always sound good split, but that's just me. They're a bit weak at around 4.0 ohms or less, give or take (if the bridge is approx 8k and the neck is 7-7.5).

The slash pups are supposed to sound great. If it were me, I would use .22 the bridge and .01 at the neck. I like the way the lower value tone caps sound personally. .47 is too much for me.

Good thoughts! I normally dont run lower output pups, so wasnt thinking about that. The guitar is a trad pro and has push pulls, so I just wanted to keep those active, but I guess that wouldnt be a major issue.

Yeah, I may do the .22 and .01 neck.. always done .22 on both.

Man, that is some tasty tone!

Re: What caps to use with Slash AIIps?

Caps are relatively cheap and easy to replace if you don't like, or want to experiment with, different values.

Go for it and most of all, have fun.

Re: What caps to use with Slash AIIps?

To be honest, I don't know how much difference a cap will make. A good neck pickup of the PAF variety (59, A2Pro, DiMarzio PAF) with the tone rolled back a bit will get you close to that sound without worrying too much about cap values.

Re: What caps to use with Slash AIIps?

I just pou a set of AII Slash pups in my LP standard. I just dropped them in and used the same cap that was there. They sound Great!!!

Re: What caps to use with Slash AIIps?

funny, the stock caps in this trad pro are the tiniest lil things Ive ever seen. one doesnt even appear to be full blob.. Its pretty skimpy. I think mentally I feel more secure with those big orange drops in there.. haha

Yeh, orange drops work great.

Varg, YES, cap values DO make a big difference in your tone as the tone control is rolled off!

If you don't believe it just try a .010 (or lower) cap and see how your tone reacts as the tone control is turned down. Notice that it only affects the very high frequencies.

Now put in a .047 (or higher) and turn the tone knob. See how you also lose the upper mids as well as the highs.

Meh, I use a fair amount of gain most of the time (so does Slash come to think of it), and I don't really notice these things. I mean, I've TRIED changing cap values and stuff, but I never notice much difference.

Re: What caps to use with Slash AIIps?

.022 bridge .015 neck and call it a day, i use this combination of sprague orange drops on an epi les paul standard plus top pro ( came from factory this way), a scratch built one off paul that i installed the shop floor custom ( nickel cover) APH-2s pups in and a 2000 usa gibson les paul standard with the stock pups. best combination i have found. now with that said however the stock caps on the 00 usa gibson were .02 ceramic disk caps so a .01 would almost be stock value for a stock usa gibson ( fyi what i mean by usa gibson is the NON custom shop gibsons).

Re: What caps to use with Slash AIIps?

Yapp 15 - 22nf seems like the sweet spot for general playing. It's nice and lightly bassy as you roll down. Higher than that and it gets very bassy as you roll down which is great for jazz or bass. Lower than that like 10nf or 6.8nf you can still hear the mids as you roll down. Can be cool for some aps but it's a thinner sound.

+ 1. I particularly like 0.015uF or even 0.01uF for a fully rolled back honky tone.

Re: What caps to use with Slash AIIps?

While this is an old thread, I use .022 with mine, and I don't really care which type, as I can't personally hear any difference between types.
