What Classic Amp needs to make a comeback?

Re: What Classic Amp needs to make a comeback?

The Vox Cambridge was a pretty cool little amp too. Kind of like a Brit Champ. Musicman amps romped as well.

Re: What Classic Amp needs to make a comeback?

Most good ones have been mentioned. If you're looking for ideas, I'd suggest simple low wattage amps like Champs, Deluxes, 18W Marshalls, AC-15's etc, only repackaged in modern heads, 1-12 & 2-12 combos. Most of the shortcomings of those original amps was the inadequate speakers/cabs, which couldn't handle low end well enough.

Re: What Classic Amp needs to make a comeback?

Yeah make more tops.
While combo's are convinient for most, I never liked them much.
Openbacks is just not my kind of sound.
AC15 head, AC30 head, old tweed bassman heads and tweed 57 twin amp heads would be awesome.
Marshall 18 watts tops, and for the clean head lovers...a Hiwatt DR504:laugh2:

Re: What Classic Amp needs to make a comeback?

Are Matchless amps back in production or are those still out of business?

Re: What Classic Amp needs to make a comeback?

Some of the old Sound City amps but only if you could use tranny's as good as the old Partridge trannys that the old Sound City's have. I would also like to see some old Silvertones but with good cabs, killer parts and nice speakers. Park 75 and 150 but again, only with amazing trannys. Magnatone 260. I would love to have a brown Fender Concert but as a head...the vibrato in those brown Fender amps is just great. In fact, blond and brown Fenders are cool amps anyway...build some of those!

Re: What Classic Amp needs to make a comeback?

I second the thunderbolt. I'd like to own a repro if possible. The real thing costs too much. I used to have one back in the day before I knew what I had. My pop sold it off when I stopped playing it and he didn't know what it was worth either. Sold it fifteen years ago for a few bucks.

Ya know... There's got to be some enterprising young Supro owner out there who would like a modern repro made of his amp so he could safely gig with it. I'll bet Scott could strike up a deal with someone to let him get a peek under the hood for a discount in labor to build a new one for him.

Oh, now THAT is an unbelievably cool-looking amp.

Remember, folks. A lot of those little old combos are un-cloneable because they used those nasty tube sets with series-wired heaters and NO PT. Death in a vinyl-covered fiberboard box.

But, back to the subject at hand. My suggestions: Ampeg V9, Sunn Colliseum. Marshall Pig. The world needs more 200-300 watt guitar amps.:laugh2:

No really - the smaller Ampegs are worth looking at. Nothing beats the old Portaflex bass amps in the studio, and the V2 series (a mere 60 watts) supposedly nice amps. The preamps are tricky, though. with all those 3-position rocker switches.

Trainwrecks are absolutely the best Amps I have ever heard!! COmets are close but not quite!

Re: What Classic Amp needs to make a comeback?

I would like to see more simple single channel amps with less bells and whistles. I pretty much have that with my Laney, but today there seem to be too many options and lower quality tone with the lower-mid end amps.

I'm still in love with my Silvertone 1484 Twin Twelve head I bought from Kevlar. Best $200 I've ever spent. :beerchug:

Ditto, check out the Soldano Avenger (50 & 100 Watt 5881), VHT Deliverance (60 & 120 watt KT-88) and the Peavy Penta (100+ watts, EL 34). All single channel, what I've heard from the Soldano and VHT were very impressive. My all time favorite amp is my Marshall 2204, that is an amp that needs to be back in production as the 2203s don't sound the same as a cranked 50 watt 2204.

Cheers,

CJ

Re: What Classic Amp needs to make a comeback?

Gallien Krueger 250ML. Awesome huge tone out of a little amp for its size with 2 6" speakers.

Re: What Classic Amp needs to make a comeback?

What about the real Tweed Deluxe that I've heard so much about fromt he 50's? If a guy could make one a ready to sell in a combo for around 1000, he could sell a few of them.

EDIT: Oops. Scott's already got this one covered: The Aislinn.

Laney Supergroup and I would love a Klipp as well.

:yourock:

I don't know much about the Klipp though, but as far as I remember, the supergroup was the amp that Tony Iommi used early in his career to get some killer tones.

One that is no longer produced... that needs to make a comeback?

How about one that never WAS produced? I speak of course of the 6V6 Plexi - plexi tones at Deluxe volumes. Much more practical than a 50 watt Marshall, more flexible than an 18 Watter.

Good luck with the Garnet BTO - a friend of mine has a Revolution II that needs work. Ol' Gar used some oddball tubes...
