What color burst is it?

I've recently acquired a nice 2005 Epiphone Les Paul Plus Top. It's a great sounding and playing guitar. Put some emg pickups in it and found out that it has about a half inch thick maple cap below the veneer. A very welcome suprise! The fellow I got it from told me it was a cinnamon burst, and I've searched for another that looks similar on the Web with no luck. Maybe you guys can tell me a little about this color.

Re: What color burst is it?

Cinnamon burst seems awfully close, although I don't see it on that model anywhere (special run maybe?).

Flame Maple Top Colors:
Heritage Cherry Sunburst (HC)
Honey Burst (HB)
Vintage Sunburst (VS)
Trans Amber (TA)
Trans Black (TB)
Wine Red (WR)
Natural (NA)
Trans Blue (TL)

Re: What color burst is it?

I imagine it could be an over sprayed cherry burst. The back of the guitar is a dark translucent red

There are a bunch if different Gibson & Epiphone models out there with this finish- some with bursts & some without.

That's pretty interesting, as this wasn't a standard finish in 2005, not that I could find anyway. Maybe I have something semi special?

Re: What color burst is it?

I've never heard of cinnamon burst. Could have been a special run.

It's definitely not desert burst.

It doesn't look like any rootbeer burst I've ever seen either...it's too reddish.

It could be a cherry burst. Usually Epiphone's cherry bursts are a brighter, lighter red, but I have seen a few that are very dark like this one (usually in Gibsons however).

If there ever was a cinnamon burst, that's my guess what it is. Otherwise I'd say it's a deep cherry burst.

Thanks for the input GuitarDoc. I wonder of it was standard practice to put maple caps on them back then. 20161212_172503.jpg

Re: What color burst is it?

I understand that the flame is a veneer, but that doesn't explain the half inch of light colored wood on top of the mahogany in that picture.

Re: What color burst is it?

Plain maple of course.....or depending on the model level something light coloured so they can claim a maple cap.
Les Pauls are way too hard to make as a full 1 piece slab of wood, so a cap of some description is by far the easiest way to do things.

As far as I know the maple cap has always been a standard feature of the LP. From what I've seen, that cap is usually a bit thinner on the Epi line. It's there to give some snap to the warm tone of the mahogany body.

No matter what that color actually is, it is a stunningly gorgeous guitar.

Just one question...why EMGs??

Well, aside from the fact that most of my guitar hero's use them, I think they sound and look awesome.

Re: What color burst is it?

Well, I've looked up the serial number. Who knows how accurate the info is, but I've come to the conclusion that it was made in Saene, Korea in June of 2005. Production number 1,432 of the month. My epi explorer was made a year or so earlier in the same factory, and it is also a fantastic guitar. Both of them are very resonant, and play very well, compared to newer epiphone guitars I've tried. I think I will call it my favorite factory.
