Delete pickguard and switch chip. Change pickup rings, switch tip and speed knobs to black. Keep nickel covers.

I would jump on nickel pickups, but I have read that there are tonal differences between covered an uncovered. Are they major and noticable tonal differences? Second, does anyone have experience with specifically the 59 or custom 5 with and without pickups? I have read some people say it is muddy, and others say its amazing and clear; could this be a result of the covers?
