I have seen some color combo's of strats with Tortise pickguards lately that in my mind I didnt think would look good but, when you see a pic, it looks great actually. What colors does Tortise not work on?

Discuss.

Anything but black, white, or natural. Some sunbursts are ok.

Pretty much everything except for black or white.

I've got a black bass with the tortoise pickguard and it looks pretty cool. However, I've never seen one on a strat and running it through my head, not too sure about it.

I do however have a sunburst with the tortoise and I love it.

I guess I am the lone voice of descent....

I don't care for tortoise pickguards at all. :boggled:

Haven't you noticed LesStrat's avatar. :boggled:

I have 2 Strats with Tortoise guards. One is a Vintage white 57 RI and I really like the way it looks. I also have a powder Blue/green Strat with tortoise and all gold hardware. I also like this one a lot. I think on a bright white guitar it won't look to cool or on a brown guitar. This is a pic of my blue one.

My MIJ Tele currently has a tortoise shell pickguard, which looks alright.

B/W/B looked just as good though.

It has to depend on the sunburst, and the particular tortoise pattern, because I think they're rather random.

I have a lot of Tele pickguards. I set them on bodies, and if I like the look, I use them. If I don't, they go into the Tele pickguard pile.

This is one of my favorites, that I don't know what to do with. It's supposed to be gold, but it's really more like orange:

It looks kind of good on Butterscotch bodies actually.

Re: What color strat body does a tortise pickguard not look good on?

You know, I think it looks good on trans whites and is acceptable, for historic reasons, on three tone sunbursts. It even looks ok on butterscotch (though, you automatically loose 100 style points for putting anything other than black on butterscotch). I really like tort on my white blond tele.

I do not care for tort on black. Tort looks TERRIBLE on orange, and putting tort on colors like seafoam or surf green only proves that you are color blind.

Pete, how do you like the bridge on that one? Does it still have some tele-ish characteristics, just warmer and fatter or does it sound like a hardtail\pickup ring setup would?

I don't particularly care for tortoise guards, but if I must use one, I'd prefer it on a white, black, natural, or cream-colored body.

Anything else looks like the guitar equivalent of a Vegas lounge act.

+1. I like them on black, though.

What I had on that guitar before was a cut off Tele bridge, but a fat flat plate one. And it used to have a Super Distortion pickup too. So it wasn't a straightforward bridge swap. Those are Duncan '59s in there now.

I'd say it's more Tele'ish having the pickup mounted in the bridge, but not in a Twang sort of way. But any time I want to play a Tele while the TV's on, this one's a good choice. This guitar has lots of sustain too, and it's always on the edge of feeding back. But no real single coil sound. It's a ham fisted Tele without much subtlety.

It's been too many years since I've heard it with it's original ashtray bridge. I almost feel bad about hogging it out for humbuckers, but I've gotten a lot of use from it since I started modding it.

Cool. I might want to go that route with my project then rather than the hardtail/pickup ring setup I originally planned. It'll be loaded with a Brobucker, set to split so I can get a single-coil tone too. I don't want it to sound like my other humbucker equipped guitars and I think that bridge might be the ticket. Who knows, in split mode I might just get some twang there.

Thanks for the info.

I dont care for tortiose on natural finish dark wood guitars.

Re: What color strat body does a tortise pickguard not look good on?

That makes 2 of us.

Make that 3. To me, Tortoise looks like someone barfed all over the guitar. :D

Pearloid, OTOH, looks great on almost any color body.

Re: What color strat body does a tortise pickguard not look good on?

None or all, depending on how you phrase the question. ;) I'm not a fan...
