What kind of music are you playing and what kind of amp is it?

An sm57 is a solid choice for most electric guitar amps.

Another vote here for the SM 57. Inexpensive and effective.

SM-57, but make sure that you have a nice preamp for it to really get the most out of the mic . . .

The one thing I like about the Sennheiser e609 is that you can use it without a stand of any kind. You can drape it over your amp so that it lands in front of your speakers however you want it to without a stand. A buddy of mine has one and it sounds just fine.

All the mics mentioned here are great starting points...just remember no matter what club you go to play in the mic that will get stuffed in front of your amp 99 times out of 100 is a SM57...

That said Im a big fan of the 421!

Plus you don't have to spend time fiddling with it to get an off-axis angle either.

SM57, Sennheiser e609, MD421

SM57 works ALL THE TIME, and works WELL! They are indestructible - I have seen them used to hammer things then put back on stands for the gig - NO LIE!
