But I like the Custom the most. Seems to me to have the most vintage tone. (vintage like burning, but vintage no less)

I love the Custom - great for hard rock in a Les Paul. :headbang: Probably a little too hard for blues, but for a ceramic magnet pickup it warms up very nicely with the volume and/or tone backed off and more gentle picking.
Tried the C5 twice but couldn't get on with it. Hard to explain, but it feels like a compromise pickup to me - too hard to be vintage, too vintage to be hard.
Other people here love it, so certainly give it a go!

Thanks all! Lateralus, I have a C4 in my Explorer. Its awesome! Its almost like the C5 only shaving off the tip of the highs and tip of the lows.
Best way to describe is this:
C5: 12345678910
C4: 23456789
CC: 45678
The C5 lows lost a tiny bit of clarity in the explorer. Im sure its the shorter scale and mahogany body. The A4 mag didnt make it middy or chage the shape, just took off the extreme edges.. I have a C5 in a Strat and RG570 and have NO probs there.
I may try a custom. I want to keep the full tone of the guitar, just enhance it

True -- the Alnico 4 has a flatter EQ response than A5, at least to my ear. Alnico 5 beefs up the bottom and top while leaving the mids more or less alone, so it sounds like a mid-scoop. The best way to think of the Alnico 4 is take an A5 and flatten out somewhat the bass and treble peaks on each end of the EQ curve. This still leaves you with a mid-scoop but not nearly as pronounced.
I currently have a "C3" in my ES-355. Alnico 3 has more shimmer than Alnico 4 but more bass than Alnico 2. Just imagine an Alnico 2 with a touch more bass and low mid. The highs seem to be nearly identical to my ear between Alnico 2 and 3.
