I only semi-agree. Work flow is very important.

(...)

Reaper's busing and work flow is definitely the weakest of all the DAWs. The way it processes plugins is also dodgy.

Yes and no. Yes for the best is to find the DAW that fits your workflow the best, it is different from producer to producer.

No for the weak workflow in Reaper. It is my weepon of choice and it is so because I haven't met any other DAW during the years that can be so fine tailored to my needs and it wins the stability award to me, too. So far it handled everything I threw at it: recording / editing / mixing full albums in one session, creating broadcast jingles with over 200 export regions / tracks in one session, mixing in-the-box and with outboard analogue gear, composing, VST / VSTi host, teaching music, whatever. The only thing I miss is that I can't set cooking and washing clothes in the finetuning menu. I've been working through an ample of DAWs since 1999 and this is the only one that fits like a glove. But I know that different way of thinking + different preferences = different workflow. That's why I don't start flaming ProTools here despite that it provided a consistent production hell for me :)

Re: What DAW do you use and why?

I used Adobe Audition (since it was Cool Edit Pro)....my last version was 1.5....and I used it TOO LONG because I am an old guy and couldn't deal with a new learning curve. BUT I WAS WRONG. I switched to Reaper a few months ago, and got the hang of the basics very quickly. Anytime I ran into a problem I just googled "Reaper+actual problem" and got the answer immediately. I noticed right away that using the same computer, guitar, mics etc....my recordings sounded clearer. Can't say why. Definitely one of the better choices I have made....great program! And my old xp computer almost never crashes with it, I constantly crashed with AA.

I use Guitar Tracks Pro 3 -- when I record, that is. For not recording, I don't use a variety of programs.

It has a very 'open source', kludgy feel. I mixed my last album on Reaper ... wasn't about to subject myself to that again!
My experience was quite different.
I went from old-school analog, to using Cakewalk Music Creator, to SONAR, to almost pitching the PC out the window.

Once I got to Reaper, it was very intuitive and familiar to me. An evening with the instruction PDF, and I was recording test tracks.

Got my feet wet, then I did my demo tracks... damn, they sound good for a bedroom studio!

Now, I'm working on a local radio ad. :fingersx:

Ha! I KNEW I should have added 'in my experience' to my thoughts on Reaper! :)
Will have to agree to disagree on this one. I cannot stand the way Reaper buses tracks nor the way sends work when setting up a bus. Compared to Cubase it's clunky and archaic ... IN MY OPINION. :)

Deleting takes is also cumbersome compared to Cubase (1 button press) or Logic (2 button presses).
