hey guys my question is when you have the sames materials . same magnets, same wire insulation gauge, everting the same why the some pickups have a EQ differents in the midrange, hi ends low ends and more articulate ? like a JB models

Re: WHAT DEFINES THE PICKUPS EQ ?

Yep, the wind is where most of the magic happens... wire tension and turns per layer, coil geometry, etc

Re: WHAT DEFINES THE PICKUPS EQ ?

teach me more about the pickup wind? is related to capacitance, inductance, and resonance peak ?

Re: WHAT DEFINES THE PICKUPS EQ ?

Noone knows except the winders lol. I'd say the pickup design (hum, p90, etc.) and mag also have an influence. To me how people know the coil material and geometry to make all these epic toanz is one of the most fascinating things in science.

There are a lot of winders who share a lot of non-specific info......as in what aspects matter. But the hard won knowledge of precisely how to alter the wind to make a certain tonal shift is something practically nobody gives away.

I've seen many winders give great advice to beginners....the tips that make it easier to get a pickup wound without breaking the wire for example.....or the best type of mechanical setup to mount the bobbin onto etc.

Yes...to all :)

There are some great resources out there

Bill Lawrence: http://www.billlawrence.com/Pages/All_About_Tone.htm/Pickupology.htm

There used to be copies of Lollar's books floating around online

https://music-electronics-forum.com/ is a forum full of winders and electrical engineer types. Great resources in the Pickup Makers forum there

There are some cool videos on YouTube that go into reasonable depth on pickup making, as well. Seymour himself was on a panel a few years ago that was pretty interesting
