What Did I Buy?

Hello, I can't ID this pickup I just bought on Ebay. I'm good-naturedly skeptical of the seller's guess (eg, "1970s?"), and I didn't really think I was ever getting a vintage pickup, but still, it would be nice to know what this sucker is. Any ideas? I'm hoping to slap this baby into my modified Telecaster at the neck position.

I'm guessing it's actually something late 1980s or early 90s. I didn't think SD as a company was even around much in the 70s. "Pre-relicked?" Uh, right. Whatev. Did I get ripped? If so, I probably deserve it for not checking here first.

Should be a Distortion (bridge I'm assuming). Good score!

Well the base plate has Seymour Duncan embossed on it.. and the sticker says DD M ..Its is a Duncan Distortion built By M. Nice Pickup I dont know if DD was introduced in the 70's. But Duncan pickups defiantly go back to the 70's.

About mid 80ies - big embossed logo and small tag with winder initial (M).
I hope the seller is not good at metering a pup otherwise you have one coil with a short.

Eek! I read your post and immediately wrote to seller. I'll have to see what happens. Bummer. :no:

Mental note to self: next time check with experts before bidding on suspicious "vintage" era product.

I did not read the metering 8.14 ohms is way to low for a DD defintly looks like one coil is short.

I wouldn't panic just yet. He might not have been reading it in series. It's hard to tell if the coil's leads are connected in that pic, but I would check on that.

Update from seller: the pickup is fine. "One coil is at 8.18 OHM (RED/Green) the other is at 7.80 (white/Blck). Together (RED/White)is testing at 15.94...I made a mistake in the listing...." So do I have a monster on my hands? I was expecting a lamb, but I'll take the monster. Gotta live dangerously. It's going to blow out my poor tele bridge pickup tho.

Whoah, that thing will be nuts in the neck of a tele. I'd say wire it in parallel to see if that clears things up a bit but if it's still too hot & muddy, split it. ~8k in the neck would sound sweet.

Yeah, it's a real mismatch. It wasn't what I was looking for by any means. Have to resell, I guess. Oh well. :no: Can there be a clearer illustration of the old adage, "Fools rush in ... ?"

Melted? Melted????? Don't you know "pre-relicked" when you're looking at it? Because everyone KNOWS that it's the BOTTOM of the pickup which is supposed to look all cool and "worn," not the top. :smack:

Srlsly, who knows what the hell happened there. All I know is I got a pickup I don't want. :crying:

Hehe. I think it's going right back to the Ebay listing hell from which the beast emerged. I need to try to recoup my 40 schekels. But I appreciate the offer. It's going to need a good home someday. I could hassle the seller about it, but really I was the idiot on this one -- I told him I'd buy it if the test showed a functioning pickup, and whaddya know, it did.

I wonder what it WOULD do if I put it in my tele. I'm no tele purist. Maybe I should just have this weird tele which goes from subtle twang to HAIRMETAL SCREAM at the flip of a switch.

Seriosuly, I wonder what the MIDDLE switch position would sound like?

switch the magnet to an A2 and try it out - that would make it the equivalent of an A2 JB since the DD and JB use the same coils. it's already used so it's not like the value will go down. it would match up with a hot bridge pickup like a rail-type Tele bridge

I think there will be too much string pull at the neck for it too boomy too. if u have another guitar around put it in the bridge

Thanks for tip. Sounds perfectly plausible to me, but methinks I want to go the lazy route and just get it back on Ebay and get it out of my life.
