What did I do wrong??? Pedal Mod question

I followed ErikH's pedal mod instructions on a Boss DS1 and I do not get any sound now. The red light lights up, however. When the pedal is off, I also do not get any sound. The amp is fine, because I tried it straight to the guitar. Any suggestions?

try reheating every solder connection to get the solder to flow. also check to see if any of the traces have lifted off the circuit board. if they have, run a jumper wire to where they should have gone. check to be sure the soldering iron didnt put a melt into any components, but most importantly check all the offboard wires at the top of the pedal (and the ribbon connections as well).

Rule of thumb: Test the pedal after each part change to make sure it is still working. That way if it suddenly stops, you know exactly where to look.

Joe mentioned good things there and I agree, check those solder connections and make sure no traces got lifted.

Good luck.

Did you change Diode's to LEDs? If so make sure you have them orientated the right way.

What do you mean by traces lifted? I hope you're not talking about the green film... Some of that did come up. Have I ruined my pedal? I did check all the solder and now the light won't come on! Guess I've learned my lesson.

Do check too your cable from guitar to pedal. It happened once that it broke just as I was modding a pedal too. Not fun, but I got it eventually.

Hopefully NO. The green film is where the trace's run in. Do you have a Multimeter with a continuity checker? you will need one to find where you broke continuity. you will the have to repair the trace or run jumper wire.
Lifting traces is a common rookie mistake. Repairing them is a major pain.
But this is how you learn.:)

Re: What did I do wrong??? Pedal Mod question

Anybody know a website that will explain how to repair traces? I don't know what kind of wire to use, how to run it, stuff like that.

Re: What did I do wrong??? Pedal Mod question

I wouldn't call lifting traces a rookie mistake.... it can happen to anybody who's applied too much heat or just soldered something too damn many times.

Can you take some closeup pics of the circuit board? As of right now, we don't even know that any damage has been done.

Also, when reheating joints, it's always a good idea to add a little flux to the joint prior to heating it. It'll keep the joints in better shape.

Since it sounds like the traces or solder pads got lifted, which is a pain, then the only avenue to take is to run a wire from one component leg to the next one in the circuit by following the PCB trace. Basically, connect the dots. The wire can be relatively thin, 22AWG to 24AWG is fine. The key to doing all of this is having the patience to do it and do it right. Also, keep your meter handy to check for continuity.

Don't feel bad that this happened. I've been doing DIY stuff for a few years and I too managed to lift the traces. It happens. You just learn and move on. To help avoid it down the road, turn the heat down a little on the iron, and when doing work like this, get in and get out - meaning get the soldering done quick and pull the heat off, don't let the iron just sit there.

Work one spot at a time, take your time and don't forget to test it after each repair. Make sure the continuity is there.

Re: What did I do wrong??? Pedal Mod question

i am wanting to get some coin together and buy a good soldering iron with a variable heat controll for work like this... i use 25w-40w Weller pen tip soldering irons. I have about 5 of them. But oneday would love to get a quality benchtop model...

I'll never forget soldering in my first replacement pickup in my old Kramer... i used my dads soldering GUN style iron that was not ment for low heat.. wrecked the pots... and after melting the solder with the high heat it was really hard to get the solder to melt again with a lower heat iron!
