What do I do? New Schecter with Floyd problem

Ok, so I got my Hellraiser about a week ago from Drum City Guitarland and got sick of the EMG's in it. When I took it apart I noticed that the knife edges on the Floyd looked slightly beat. The chrome is worn off, which shouldn't hurt anything, but on the high strings side it looks like it's slightly dulled. I tried to get a pic, you can see it pretty goog.

I have noticed after I switched the low strings from a set of tens to elevens that the high strings will do the old staying sharp after you pull up, flat after diving thing. It might have done this before I switched strings but I didn't check as closely. It's not a huge difference in pitch, you can barely hear it, but it can be seen on the tuner.

So, what I'm asking is what do you think I should do? The knife edge is dulled just very slightly, so I might just have the bridge slightly out of tune because of the string gauge change. Or would any dulling of the knife edge be a problem? Should I contact Schecter? Thanks

any time you adjust the string gauge on a guitar with a Floyd, you have to balance the springs in the back as well. That's why i never use them anymore.

Tweak the springs on the bass side of the trem and intonate everything. Give the strings a day or two to break in and if there's still a problem, i'd have a tech look at it.

Do those have a real Floyd or a copy? Most of the copies are fairly low-quality, and will wear out quickly. If that guitar was hanging up, it could be pretty worn.

Do like EP said, and set it up properly then see if it stays in tune. Make sure to stretch the strings well before tightening the nut clamps. Also, heavier gauge strings will wear out the Licensed Floyds much faster, due to the higher tension on the edge.

yeah that's the problem with those mid-priced metal guitars. you get exactly what you pay for.

Re: What do I do? New Schecter with Floyd problem

I just checked the Schecter site, and the Hellraisers have OFRs, so the bridge really shouldn't be wearing out. It's probably just a setup issue.

Re: What do I do? New Schecter with Floyd problem

Yeah it does have a OFR, that's why I bought it, and I was told it was NIB also. I know OFR's don't wear that fast I thought it looked like maybe it was abused when it was assembled or something? idk though. I'll try adding spring some tension on the bass side and see if that helps.

It's actually a really nice guitar. It plays beautifully, and it's built well. Like the frets are perfectly level, something I wasn't entirely expecting. The only thing it was lacking in for me was in the tone department because of the actives. That and the small fit and finish details aren't perfect being korean made.

Re: What do I do? New Schecter with Floyd problem

Then it probably just needs a few tweaks with a screwdriver. No stress man.

Re: What do I do? New Schecter with Floyd problem

It is an OFR alright but NOT a Schaller-built one.

IIRC it was build in China or sth and it is meant for OEM-only use.
It still bears the OFR insignia and licenses but there are differences as XSSIVE has extensively explained in another thread.

What this unit needs is a GOOD tech with experience with Floyds to do a little maintenance on it and chances are it'll work great afterwards.

Re: What do I do? New Schecter with Floyd problem

put it back together and if it doesn't work you have a problem, otherwise, don't worry about it. also you can put a small amount of chapstick (tiny amount, don't make a mess) on the edges of the knife edges where they meet the posts to help keep things moving smooth. that's an old old trick.

I just have to finish the pup change then I'll put it back together.

I'd never heard anything about the Chinese made OFR's before. I guess I'll be looking up that thread. Do they last as long as a real OFR? Or are they more similar to a licensed?

Re: What do I do? New Schecter with Floyd problem

IIRC they´re not chinese made, but Korean. PING is the manufacturer. They´e the only trem that (according to floyd rose) has a quality high enough to warrant allowing them to stamp the logo on their baseplates ;)

Either way, they´re better than almost any licensed trem out there. Not as good as a "real" Schaller made OFR, but good enough that I´d say 90% of the people that buy a guitar with one won´t swap it out anytime soon...

Re: What do I do? New Schecter with Floyd problem

Ya, get a pro setup. You've changed guage of the strings, and that usually always requires some bridge tweaking.

Re: What do I do? New Schecter with Floyd problem

Did you set it up properly after the switch?

Funny, but I've had some trouble with the Schecter licensed FRs...one had super slippery blocks (not slippery obviously but they didn't hold the strings at all)

Re: What do I do? New Schecter with Floyd problem

I had a BIG problem with my OFR guitar, and mainly the G would go sharp after a dive bomb. Eventually I figured that the saddles could be binding and therefore not returning properly so I just dropped a little 3 in 1 light oil between the saddles and problem sorted!

Re: What do I do? New Schecter with Floyd problem

I did set it up after the string change. I have the springs pulling equally on each side now with the bridge level. Should have the springs on the bass side so they're a little tighter than the treble side because of the mixed set of strings?

Also the bridge is out of level side-to-side, so the action will be equal on all the strings. This is normal and shouldn't cause any problems right?

One more question that doesn't have to do with the floyd. Anyone know where I can get pots to fit in the small holes for the EMG pots?

Re: What do I do? New Schecter with Floyd problem

I contacted Schecter once about that and they said that although they could provide with some pots to fit they'd be just "ok" pots and that if I wanted to use sth better I'd be better off widening the holes (I'm guessing the ol' sanding paper wrapped around a pencil 'd do the job) and installing proper ones instead...

Re: What do I do? New Schecter with Floyd problem

I had the same problem with tuning until I replaced my post with OFR posts. The OFR posts hold the knife edge better than non OFR posts. Assuming that your setup is good and your strings are stretched.
