Re: what do i need for recording..

i used a POD to make some demos a few years ago.... i kind of wished i used my real amp and a mic as i don't really know all the in's and outs of using modelers yet... so great to hear you are planning on micing amps

Re: what do i need for recording..

You'll need an computer interface with converters on it to get from the mics/mixer to the software & back out again. Firewire like the Presonus or some of the Motu offerings are your best bet.

Ideally you'll want some monitors or headphones so you can hear what your recording too!

For books... I always recommened "Modern Recording Techniques" by Huber & Runstein. There's others out there... a trip to the local 'Borders' might be in order so you can rifle through a bunch of 'em. Don't forget about the library too, this recording thing hasn't really changed much since the '70s other then moving to digital. The "core" fundamentals are still the same as they ever were...
