What do i need for small gig..

Okay, my band got offered a gig, for $500 AUD. We're planning on doing a few practise gigs at youth groups before this of course, but they have the equipment. For this gig, we would of course need the equipment. Its over 80 16 year olds. I'm pretty sure the peavey classic 30 i'm buying could handle this size gig without pa system. But how many watts shopuld the bass amp be, and do we need a PA system for such a small gig? Will the drums need any assistance or can they just be unmiked. As for vocals, would we will be able to run the mike through a amp such as a roland cube 15 etc. what amp would you suggest for this? or perhaps a speaker or something, I don't know much about vocals.

you will definitely need more wattage for vocals....15 watts is just not gonna cut it from a microphone. The amp that you use for vocals should be your most powerful by far...you're gonna need a pretty good bit of power to get over the drums, guitar, and bass

wow .. you were offered 500 for a gig ?
Thats great .. here we do either volunteerily or every member is paid 30 bucks for an hr. Some places do offer more to professionals which they so-called LIVE BAND.
But I guess it depends on the place you performing. If its an enclosed area prolly a 50 watter tube amp/guitarist is good enough + some mics and monitors. Drums can forget about mic-ing it up.
If its open doors, then prolly you need to mic up the amps, thats all.

Before I forget, pedals are negligeble because everyone has their own sound from there. =)

You need the PA to put your vocals through, there is no way that vocals through any type of guitar amp, let alone a practice amp, will be sufficient for a gig. Ideally i would say rent a good quality PA and mike up everything, it will take a chunk out of the cash for the gig, but i don't see how else, unless you can borrow a PA, you can do it.

I just realised the vocal problem. We won't need to play to loud, believe me, its in someones house/yard. not a huge space. Now I just got this crazy idea, how about running vocals through a keyboard amp? How would the quality be on a 60 watt keyboard amp (2 inputs) say we were running keyboard and vocals through it... I don't like my chances... just wondering. We don't need to be to loud, just above jam session volume, people still gotta be able to hear themselves chatting away only a small distance away from us. How would the quality be running vocals through a keyboard amp while playing keyboard and is it even possible? is 60 watt loud enough? The only other option is to hire a pa system... or buy a $800 PA system... which is an investment I don't wanna take yet.

I'd see if you could hire a cheap PA head and a couple of PA speakers. 100 Watts would probably be enough, put the speakers on stands, so the vocals dont just hit the first row and disappear, think about putting your amps up on something too, to help with volume spread and being able to hear yourself.

outside requires more watts not less-
60 key amp might work, but dont risk it- if you want to keep $500 gigs you should rent a PA system- Consider going bigger instead of smaller and go with very small amp or even modeling and then reinforce thougth PA- Even with a newbie engineer your sound will be 200% better-

they do make vocal amps that are designed to handle vocals. a lot of keyboard amps and acoustic guitar amps also have a microphone in for vocals because some people who play solo use just the one amp and because those amps are designed for a much wider array of frequencies than a typical guitar amp, they're better suited to vocals. If y'all are thinking about doing this regularly, rent the PA, take the money you make, and put it in a PA fund...that's all I have to say about that

Okay, well my keyboardist needs an amp anyway, and its got to be cheap. Theres an australian company called Ashton and they sell a 60 watt one for $450 AUD. Do you have any other suggestions for keyboard amps in the same price range. can this ashton amp do vocals and keyboard at the same time, sorry I don't really understand this type of thing to well. http://www.ashtonmusic.com.au/productView.asp?productID=123
And if you don't think that has enough power there is a 100 watt version for not much more, but thats probably to exspensive, hes a little strapped for cash. Thanks
