What do IRON MAIDEN's guitarists really use on their guitars?

I heard Janick currently use JB. Jr's on his guitar although on this website it is said Hot Rails. Dave Murrey is as well . I heard adrian use Dimarzio's Super Dist.
What did they really use at last 3 album recordings ?

Janick uses JB. Jr's, at least in the bridge. Perhaps he uses a Hot Rails in the neck or on one of his other guitars but his main pickup is the JB Jr ... and I really hate his tone (and Maiden's my all time favorite band).

Dave Murray uses the Hot Rails - his solos are using the neck pu and I really love his tone. Adrian Smith still uses the Super Dist and Dave used to use the Super Dist back in the 80s.

I believe these are the pickups they've used on the past 3 CDs. Adrian also uses a stock Gibson SG for a few songs. Adrian also has Texas Specials in the neck/middle but I don't believe he uses them.

I hope JeffB chimes in - his avatar is Adrian Smith so he should know some of this stuff.

Can anyone confirm this? IIRC Maiden uses Marshall JCM2000 DSLs.

That's bad ... but you're probably right. I saw Maiden live last month and I hate hearing Jannick masscre Adrian's solos.

Actually Janick's tone is the best thing he has going for him! I don't mind his tone at all. But yeah, as I told ErikH the other day, Janick is the Euro-Metal equivalent of CC Deville :laugh2:

Dave used a pair of Supers in the very early days, then a Super/PAF, and he uses HR now.

Adrian has used whatever came in his guitars stock mostly (like his two Norlin SGs, Lados, Destroyer II, Deans). His Goldtop had minis, then he put Dimarzio hot P90s in it (circa Killers & NOTB) then routed it for a full size super and put the mini back in the neck. Later on he used a SuperD/PAF in his 2 bucker strat types (Jacksons) and uses SuperD /TX Specials in his Fenders.

I read an article in some british rag last year that said they've been using DSLs the last several tours and Adrian uses a 30th Anny in the studio.

Yeah I know wayyyyy too much about these guys. What can I say, I'm a Gear-Ho in general and a hardcore Maiden fan

Actually, neither Dave Murray OR Adrian Smith are the "original" guitarists for Maiden, but they are considered the "classic" team...

Adrian has less ability than Janick? I have to assume that's a joke. :wrf: You clearly haven't noticed Adrian can play his solos pretty much perfectly live, same as they appear on the albums. Janick can't, he just flaps his hands at the fretboard while doing some stupid high kick or something.

Note that neither Adrian nor Jannick were the original guitarist for this song. Great example of each guitar players approach to soloing.

Adrian: make something fit and be musical.

Jannick :jump around like an idiot and play a flurry of tremelo picked pentatonic scales..mostly out of tune, and out of time.

Sad thing is one can't even argue in Jannicks favor as "well hes jumping around because its all about the stage show when you are playing live, and its OK if the sound is not all that good" Cos he plays the exact same way in the studio

Hey, Malmsteen can do ***** tosses and kicks while he shreds and he usually just misses a couple of notes...but I do like Janick a bit. Not as much as Adrian, and definitely not as much as Dave. Dave is my all time guitar hero. Yeah not even Vai takes his spot.

Adrian beats Janick by miles. It's not even fair to compare the two. I'M a better guitar player than Janick. Adrian is just a legend. His soloing, and songwriting helped massively to create the best metal band ever.
Janick did nothing to further that legend, all he did was be vaguely entertaining in a "village idiot" type way, while butchering solos and ruining one of the most musical metal bands around.

Dave, well, Dave's Dave. He's contributed very very little in terms of songs, so it's not really fair to compare him to Adrian.
But in terms of soloing, Dave is just incredible. Dave and Adrian together, trading solos - it'll never be beaten. The most classic metal twin guitar team ever.
Janick doesn't even deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as these two.

Seems like a major Janick backlash happening. I always bought Maiden's new 'tapes' on their release date. I remember buying No Prayer for the Dying when it came out. Adrian was out and it was Janick's first appearance. I was disappointed, needless to say.

I'm thrilled that Adrian's back (as well as Bruce too).

But Sykes IS WHITESNAKE!!!! no matter what anyone says...right? Haha I just remembered that thread and the other day I saw a Whitesnake Live DVD and saw Doug Aldrich butcher Still of the Night. With great tone and a great guitar. But he butchered it nonetheless...

I teched for Doug for a show, and 'butcher' it he did NOT...:wrf:
Haven't seen the DVD in question, but I find that hard to imagine, even.
Both Doug and John are two of the coolest guys you'd ever want to meet. :notworthy

Janick definitely does not deserved to be mentioned in the same breath as Alrdich and Sykes, nor Murray and Smith, either for that matter...just sayin'...
