What do Mini-Humbuckers sound like?

Re: What do Mini-Humbuckers sound like?

I think there are a couple of different kinds of "mini-humbucker"... but Noel Gallagher used to use lots of guitars with them :D

I have one in the neck of my Tele. It's a perfect blues pickup, but for surf I'll always reach for my 3S Strat, a la D!ck Dale. I bet that Schecter would sound great though.

Well, technically just the Union Jack painted custom shop Sheraton he played around '96. Most of the studio sounds are full-size humbucker equiped Les Pauls, Firebirds, and Rivieras.
On the "There and Then" DVD, when he's using the mini-humbucker equipped Sheraton at Maine Road Stadium, his tone is definitely a little brighter and thinner than his normally bright Marshally tone. A very "cutting" sound, almost like a Telecaster to my ears. Great bright rhythm tone, maybe a little bit too bright and thin for a fat bridge solo tone, better switch to the neck pickup for that.
Neil Young has a mini-humbucker Firebird pickup in the bridge spot of his Les Paul. Through a pegged 'ol Fender Tweed amp, that thing sounds pretty awesome.

Yeah, I was thinking of the "supernova". I think he's also used Rivieras with mini-buckers before, too... I seriously thought about putting a mini in the bridge of my Dot, to get more "control" over driven chords as Noel does in that DVD, but it would have been more trouble than it was worth. I also like the sound of Firebirds with them... if/when the time comes for electric #2, a firebird may be the one for me... :)

To be honest, I heard Noel playing through a bunch of Marshalls and thought they sounded great for lead... but then, I'm not your guy if you want opinions on surf rock, cos I barely listen to it...

Mini-humbuckers can sound like this :

More definition than a full-sized humbucker, but fatter than a single coil. I have two in my Epi Firebird, and I'm very happy with them for both rhythm and lead. The pickups in that Schecter look more like Gretsch Filtertrons than Firebird or Les Paul minis, in which case they would probably be good for surf rock.

Re: What do Mini-Humbuckers sound like?

I had a gibson nighthawk with a pair of mini's. I loved them to death.( the guitar had buzzing problems, tho). my fav tone was the bridge with distortion. it's quiet as a humbucker but it has that raw distorted sound that speads out instead of focused like a full size hummer. I was much younger at the time and was into nirvana very much. that particular tone was really fun to play "smells like teen spirit" with.

when i think minibuckers, i think pete from the who with his awesome les paul deluxes...probably not the most accurate response:smokin:

Mini humbuckers are tight, bright, compressed, and cut through. They are kind of half dirty sounding and aggressive. I love their sound.

Re: What do Mini-Humbuckers sound like?

is there a single coil sized humbucker that sounds like a mini?
I mean from duncan or DMZ?

Re: What do Mini-Humbuckers sound like?

Only a mini sounds like a mini, unfortunately. Fortunately, the firebird style minis use blades, making them easy to use in strat bridges with only a pickguard swap.

I have a SM-1 in the neck of my tele and I love it. It can be bright and cutting or smooth and smokey, depending on the tone pot and on the way I pick.

Re: What do Mini-Humbuckers sound like?

I´m currently thinking about getting 3 of them.

but which one?

I´m leaning towards the Customs, but I fear to much output.
And the seymourized have more Bass, what I think is even worse…

Oh, I´d go for a series/parallel switch for all of them : )

Has anyone tried them both?
