What do the Hot Stacks for strat Sound Like?

Re: What do the Hot Stacks for strat Sound Like?

Hey G&L; I'll jump in here only because no one else has, but others are better to comment on this. I had a Hot Stack for a short period of time. Maybe, two months. It didn't really have the "jingle-jangle" that I associate with singles, but it was a nice pup. It struck me as being very smooth and warm. It was somewhere between a single and a 'bucker. It also didn't strike me as being all that "hot". It really didn't have all that much more output than the Classic Stack that was in there before.

Overall, I liked it a lot. It was one more of those deals where I traded it simply because I was/am still checking out Duncan pups.

Hope this helps.

Not really hot and not much output, as Artie mentioned. But it is more focused, and more punchy on the low notes than, say, SSL-1, at least in my environment. Then it impressed me very much in single coil mod - it becomes a little louder, gets additional highs and "air". On the whole - decent bluesy sound. I like it.

Thanks for your input. See my dilema is I have a G&L Legacy. I really like the pups, but they are really noisy. I love the single-coil Characteristics but I want pups were I can get a little more warmth and output with no noise but to still have the great single coil sound. Am I asking too much? Any other suggestions?

You're not asking for too much . . . you're asking for the new Duncan Stack Plus, (STK-S4) . . . coming soon. They should be released soon. Do a search for "stack plus" or "new stacks", etc. There's been quite a few posts about them. They sound like exactly what you're looking for.

G&L, you are asking for the Hot Stacks.

The Hot Stacks are hotter than the Classic Stacks but they aren't as high in output as the lil59. They are also a bit warmer than the Classic Stacks but not as round and full sounding as the lil59 so your request for something a bit higher in output and a bit warmer than stock with no 60 cycle hum is pretty much covered by the Hot Stacks.

I had a set in my Strat for quite awhile and I liked them a lot but I decided to go for more output in my Strat and ended up replacing them with a JB in the bridge and a lil59 in the neck. I still have the Hot Stack in the mid position and it's an excellent single coil sounding hum free pickup when used between 2 humbuckers because of its added output and warmth.

You G&L will still sound like a Strat with the Hot Stacks installed, just warmer and a bit louder.

The new Stack Plus pickups are excellent sounding and really do get all over a true single coils tone without the hum but they won't get you the warmth and output bump you are looking for.

What Robert said :D

And

The hot stacks have more midrange output and less twang. You notice the "lesser twang" more on the bridge pickup. They still have single coil tone.
I am a big fan of the strat hot stack neck pickup. I have on in a tele. It seems to be a little more agressive than a typical strat neck pickup, but it is still very glassy and sensitive.

Here's a tune that I did with a hot stack in the neck position of a tele: stat hot stack in tele neck, c5 in bridge

Re: What do the Hot Stacks for strat Sound Like?

Thank you. I have a Hot stack on the way for the bridge position (initially, i had a JB Jr. but wanted to retain single coil sound so sent back for a hot stack) if I like it I am going to get them for mid and neck.
