they're quite popular around here, whatchoo say?

Re: what do y'all think about CA acoustics?

very nice! They sound great (although the store was kinda noisy) and play well. I'd get one. I really like the Composite Electrics Blade I tried too.

Re: what do y'all think about CA acoustics?

The CA guitars aren't too shabby. Don't expect a woody tone, but the quality is great and the amount of overtones was surprising. Much like a good, dense, piece of rosewood. Great playability, great sound. I'd love one for my bang around git. Lord knows they could handle it, and sound a lot better than a laminate.

Re: what do y'all think about CA acoustics?

big price tags though

what might be the advantages/disadvantages over wood, for the same price?

Re: what do y'all think about CA acoustics?

well, I do know they sound and feel great

oh well. I'll just talk to the people walking into the store; every third person owns at least one of em. One guy in particular who I trust thinks they're super.

just wonderin' what people here thought; I was going to ask about the differences between the CA slim bodies and finger-style cutaways and dreadnoughts because I know next to nothing about acoustics or how the composite materials relate to long-term ownership. I'll just go play em a lot; I have quite a while before I'll have any money.

I do know when they arrive at the store, they pop-out of the box and case perfectly in tune and require zero setup work to sound amazing. Pricey, though.

Re: what do y'all think about CA acoustics?

well they will sound the same 100 years from now, which may be good or bad. i think the eq of each composite guitar is more scooped- not as many mids as a wood guitar. When you strum a chord, you tend to hear individual strings versus a unified tone. I love this, but some people don't. The bass has this piano-like resonance going on. Structurally, there is no heel, and the tops can be really thin and rarely requires bracing, so it is technically louder and clearer. Overall, it is a modern sound, but most acoustic guitarists want to sound more traditional. They also take processing better than wood guitars. I tend to go for more modern acoustic sounds (Al Dimeola, Adrian Legg, Kaki King) so Ive gone with a carbon fiber guitar.

Sound good and they are local to us in Louisiana.

hey man thanks
I agree about the piano sound and the individual string clarity, yep.

also, they don't seem like folk strummers (?), like, I don't know, if I was gonna bang away on old America, like Sister Goldenhair Surprise or something - they get blubbery on the low strings .... But for some stuff I want to get into like banjo rolls, Dust in the Wind, Alex Lifeson's Broon's Bane (live intro to The Trees), it seems like the right kind of guitar. Maybe even be able to tackle some flamenco and other stuff usually reserved for a classical nylon string, like Liona Boyd covering Torroba and Segovia, or Charo. Yes, I love Charo. I don't think I HAVE to get a classical guitar with nylon strings to be able to tackle some of that (eh?).

Q - some with elex have the mic in the sound hole and some have a piezo - thoughts on which? both?

Re: what do y'all think about CA acoustics?

I devoured their website....I'm interested in their baritone dreadnought and their cutaways, too, as well as their slim bodies and smaller Cargo models; well, I guess that's most of their models! ...seems every time I'm at the store someone is asking when their Cargo will get there. Gonna play a bunch today. I've played a few before but got lost in comparing them to their wooden neighbors.

I've managed to sell myself on carbon fiber; I know there are cheaper ones than these though.

I don't suppose anyone can recommend a different carbon fiber brand?

Re: what do y'all think about CA acoustics?

Well, there aren't many choices...there is Adamas, and Rainsong. Both make awesome guitars. I like my Adamas, but the other 2 companies were not around when I bought it. I played a Rainsong that was absolutely amazing, but it was $2.5k. Since it is fairly new and boutique (so to speak) and the process of making guitars with it is expensive, unless you find one used, it won't be cheap.

Re: what do y'all think about CA acoustics?

thanks Mincer

I've been meaning to tell you: every time I see your avatar with the red Steiny, I look over at my old Arbor Stilleto hanging on the wall that looks *just* like it. Except it has a fixed bridge, with the strings fanning out to the tuning machines at the bottom - it just looks so cool! I need to get it in shape; it'd make a great stage guitar for a song or two.

Re: what do y'all think about CA acoustics?

Ha! Ive seen those- very cool! This particular Steinberger has a fixed bridge, and 22 frets...very comfortable to play too.

Re: what do y'all think about CA acoustics?

I've played a couple of the CA guitars last couple of times I was up at Bellevue American Music, and thought they were okay--not bad at all.

I think if I lived in Hawaii, or perhaps NOLA, I could see having a guitar impervious to humidity changes. But I don't.

I like Martins.

Re: what do y'all think about CA acoustics?

Bill,

BAM has treated me so very well over the years that I can hardly believe it; I bet you know what I'm talking about.

Re: what do y'all think about CA acoustics?

I live in Portland now, but I've been shopping at American Music since Reese and Andy had the little store up on Greenwood--that's where I bought my Ibanez Artist 5-string banjo back in 1976. Bought a couple of guitars from Johnny over the years. Bought my first G&L Legacy from him when he was up at Band-Aid Music in Lynnwood. I still have a little Hondo 335 clone that Jim blew out to me about 15 years ago--great little guitar.

And I've bought a lot of other pieces from them, too. Yeah, I can look around at my gear, and get homesick real fast. I still try to stop by everytime I'm up there. They have a Martin I have my eye on, so I may have to come up at the end of the month to drool on it.

Tell 'em hi for me!

Bill
