What do you guys know about them? I heard the strings can pop off of the bridge saddles very easily, what kind of trem is it? Vibrato or "whammy"? How different is it from a strat?
They're basically In no way similar to a strat trem, at least not in How they function. And Yes The strings fall off the saddles alot, unless you do things to stop it from happening, Such as the Buzz Stop as mentioned by Stratman. I'm not sure you'de really need to replace the saddles with Mustang saddles, Although it can help. And doing the thing to keep the bridge from rocking, kind of defeats the purpose of the Jazz/Jag trem. The bridge is suppoused to rock, as that actually helps it stay in tune better (oddly enough).
Now If you just like the way the bridge LOOKs, or you just like jag's/jazzmasters, But don't really care about the trem (like me.) theres alot you can do to the bridge to fix some problems.
If you don't wanna use the trem, Just use the "lock" funtion to lock it in place (obviously) and that will help tuneing stability. Also you can replace the Bridge with a Tuneomatic, Just take the posts, and shove em down into the inserts for the rocker bridge. Make sure you wrap the tuno posts in a bunch of tape first (to keep them from rocking), and that always keeps the strings from popping out (well most the time at least). You can still use a buzz stop if you want, But They're not really that important if your not gonna use the Trem function.
If you don't wanna use a tunomatic, You can simply wrap the legs of the rocker bridge in tape, so as to kill the rocking function (much easier to come by tape than it is little brass tubes). That helps the tuneing stability. Putting some loctite on the height adjustment screws kills alot of the Buzz/rattling. But you'll still have the problem of the strings poping outta the saddles if you don't use a buzz stop, or switch to a tuneomatic. I mean unless you play really softly, in which case the strings won't pop outta the saddles at all. But Who wants to play softly? thats no fun.
Another thing to try if you wanna use the rocker bridge, but don't wanna use mustang saddles, Or a buzzstop is....Get a small triangular file, and Deepen the slots on the Saddles. They're threaded saddles, so just pick whichever thread you normally have the string in, for whatever string spread you prefer, and simply Deepen the thread a bit. And it'll cut down how often the strings pop out, But it will still happen.
But heres the best suggestion I have. If you don't like the Jazz/Jag Trem/bridge, and don't wanna deal with all its quirks. Don't buy a Jazz or Jag. The bridge is what it is, just like a Tele bridge adds to the Tele Sound, and a strat trem adds the the strat sound, The Jazz/jag Bridge is part of what makes them sound like they do. Part of having that sound is dealing with all the annoying crap that goes along with the bridge. If you change everything abuot it to get it stop being annoying its not gonna sound the same.
But If your like me, And just think that Jazzmasters and Jaguars Look Kool, and Wouldn't look as Kool without a Big Shiney Bridge. Then Go right ahead and modify it until it stops being annoying. But its not gonna sound the same afterwards.
