When referring to pick-ups and woods, I usually hear the term "scooped" mids or treble? What does this mean, say, like swamp ash has scooped mids?

Re: What do you mean by "scooped"?

i'v never really heard about the ash and scooped mids. But anyway scooped mids are when the mids are dialed out. kind of like when an eq has that V look to it when the mids are dialed out or "scooped". think heavy metal rhythm tone.

Re: What do you mean by "scooped"?

yer, if you were scooping the mids on ur amp, you would bring the middle down to zero, or at least very low, so if a wood has scooped mids it means its naturally a wood with very low mids.

what they said

and with that said, i'll say scooped mids sound like crap :)

sometimes. it is possible to scoop mids and sound awesome.

Re: What do you mean by "scooped"?

Kinda depends on how the sound is in the whole picture...being singleminded about sound is no help.
Scooped is dialing out certain midfrequencies, most likely the lower ones in the midregistry.

Except, IMO, on a Mesa Mark series amp. For some reason, scooping sounds better on those babies.

+1 :burnout:

EDIT: For funky rythm tones, it's cool. :) But for OD... a great part of dynamics comes from the midrange, doesn't it?

+1, mids are essential for the guitars tone to cut rhough the mix

i think you're confusing "small mind syndrome" with "knows how to get a good tone by using the midrange frequencies, and not dialing them out unlike certain faggots who seem to dial them out because they think it gives them great tone but it ends up sounding like utter ****" syndrome

it often gets confused between individuals :)

Re: What do you mean by "scooped"?

I like both. A scooped mid sound has a certain dark, heavy, almost evil sounding quality, that you won't get by having your mids high. The negative is that without mids your guitar can get lost in the mix in a band situation. Higher or really high mids tend to accentuate the crunchy or punchiness of a guitar, but can sound bad in certain amps. Its all taste and really what style your playing.

Re: What do you mean by "scooped"?

years ago, i played in a band. the tone i used in that band was the one i had created before the band. that tone had the scooped mids. i loved it, because by myself, it sounded good. my bass player, who had a five string, always played on his third string (dropped tuning, of course). it baffled me until very recently. i always thought he was just weird, but since i had all the bottom end and no mids, he had to play in the mid-bass frequencies. the moral of the story is that you have to find a tone that you like, but that also allows room for the people you are playing with. music is really all about space, right?

Nope, I was right. :)

P.S. I don't scoop - but I keep and open mind about those who do. Some guitarists have gotten awesome tones with scooped mids.
