What do you put between your mic and the PC when you record?

Hey guys,

I am going to start recording some stuff using a Shure SM57 mic.

What pre amp should I put before the PC?

Do you have any good recomendations? Something relatively cheap but with a high quality sound?

Do you also have some freeware recording programs in mind?

Thanks a lot

Re: What do you put between your mic and the PC when you record?

not that I can do much with a computer, but the options are many, with external gear and programs and plug-ins.

free recording: audacity is OK and takes less memory to run; reaper seems better, but a little harder to learn; n-track (a nice program) has a free trial version that beeps when you go to mixdown - so if you have two computers, you could multitrack in one, then record the mix on a second computer while it's playing.

b/w the mic and computer: you could get away with a simple radio shack/behringer/ART mixer or preamp or go nuts spending a bunch. my take is: if the end result is demo-quality anyway, why spend a lot? a halfway decent mixer with a preamp works fine. most often, when you play your mix along side a professionally mastered MP3, yours will sound tiny, even if your mix/master is "loud." mastering is a whole 'nother beast, and will drive you crazy.

believe it or not, I've used this one for years: http://cgi.ebay.com/Radio-Shack-Por...yZ101985QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I kinda dig the old-school level monitor thingies.

however, b/w the mic and computer it's good to have a compressor/limiter (don't get the alesis nanocompressor, it barely does its job), but you can get away with compressing the wave after its recorded with a simple plug-in. but an external unithelps to prevent the huge spikes that would otherwise clip. I just squash stuff after I record it with a plug-in.

Thanks Dankstar.

So a simple mixer should do the job of a mic pre amp. Just any mixer? I have two of those somewhere around here... All the inputs and outputs are RCA. I just convert to 1/4 jack and everything works out?

Also,
What is that plug in you use to compress everything?

What I used to do was come out of the RCAs into a little adaptor that had female RCAs on one side and a 1/8" stereo male plug on the other end. I used that to either go into my computer's sound card or a little I-MIC external USB soundcard. Maybe start with the cheapy so you have a reference if you ever go to upgrade - perhaps the new one won't beat out the cheap one, ya know?

I've used all sorts of plug-ins for compression - sometimes whatever is in audacity; I also imported some stuff into cool edit (now called something else) and used it's compressor suite. this place has a cool one-knob compressor I've used before: http://www.betabugsaudio.com/plugs.php

Thanks bro, I ll get some wires/adaptors and try that mixer. Thanks for the site...

Re: What do you put between your mic and the PC when you record?

I didn't go to the shop yet to get those... I ve been really busy rediscovering Fernando Sor's pieces!

I just thought I'd bump this and get maybe some brand names and models of good pre amps thatt people in this forum actually use or heard of...

Re: What do you put between your mic and the PC when you record?

I dug up my dad's mixers today. Well the old one seems busted! It's useless.

The newer one is a video mixer! :smack: Just my luck.... :)

Well, I am back to square one...

Re: What do you put between your mic and the PC when you record?

I'm just using a XLR->USB converter between the mic and the computer.

And of course audacity. Seems to work fine for me...

Re: What do you put between your mic and the PC when you record?

audacity is a software right? Does your soundcard have a build-in mic pre amp?? does it make a difference if connect to a USB rather than the 1/8 jack?

That's what I need. One of those... Thanks for the info ratherdashing!

What program do you use for recording (and editing)?

lol ... that is a sensitive question right now! I had to finally give up on ProTools LE because of hardware conflicts on my computer.

After much research, I've decided to replace it with Cakewalk SONAR 6 Studio. I used to have Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 back in the pre-ProTools days, and it was really excellent. From what I've seen of SONAR, it's even better. If you don't think you'll need all the features Studio has, they also have SONAR Home Studio at a much lower price. It's a very powerful DAW itself - just not quite as feature-rich as Studio or Producer.

A lot of other people like the Cubase stuff, and for Mac users it's probably the best DAW out there. If you happen to get a hardware product that comes with Cubase, stick with that - it's great software and will definitely give you what you want. Personally, I like the look and feel of SONAR a lot better, but that's just my preference.

Re: What do you put between your mic and the PC when you record?

After years of recording, I found this to work wonders! Put a sound baffle (or any type of carpet to lay your amp on). This eliminates the floor and the harsh sounds the floor projects when recording. The Shure 57 is a bit over rated in my opinion. Try the Sennheiser 609e. They cost the same, about $100 or so. A huge difference. If you can afford a good preamp, invest in a Manley. You can even use a Joe Meek [anything] and it will sound great. Those tricks will do wonders for your tone! If you are looking for a smoother tone, use a heavier gauge pick too along with .10's.

If you'd like to hear some of my instrumentals to get an idea of some tones I have gotten with these techniques, give it a listen at http://www.SORStudios.com/grande

I must agree with the Cakewalks Sonar point from Ratherdashing. I used to use Protools but not even Protools likes using Protools :) Cakewalk is stable and robust and best of all NOT Proprietary!

I hope it helps!

Re: What do you put between your mic and the PC when you record?

Thanks for the info guys. I really need something cheap and of good quality.

I am not sure if I am going to be able to hear the difference between a $200 pre amp and a $500 pre amp, or between the SM57 and the E609. I just need a good mic to use both live and at home, plus a reliable good quility pre amp.

As for software, I was hoping for a nice freeware program lol... or just the software that comes with the pre amp. I just checked those software programs you suggested, man they are sure a big investment!!

Thanks again

I`m using a focusrite trakmaster,i add no compression or eq to the signal.....just the sound of a good preamp :)
I know m-audio,mackie and tacam makes some good mic stuff :) ehh ...if you don`t wanna pay too much

you mean this: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Focusrite-TrakMaster-Pro-Channel-Strip?sku=188228

That's not too expensive in comparison with the tascam I guess...

I would hate to go into digging for this stuff. It took me about a year to learn the basics about amps, I d hate to go into the same process for pre amps! hehe...

Re: What do you put between your mic and the PC when you record?

Do the tubes really work in there Marin? Is the gain as good as it should be?
I did read through your article about recording before I posted this thread.

Thanks
