What do you think about aluminium guitars ?

Guitar players, for the most part, are very picky, rock solid into the more traditional side of things.

Very seldom will you see someone rant and rave about a carbon fibre guitar, acoustic, or electric.
I also know that there where the od aluminium guitar threads a few years ago . . . and i liked them.

But my alu-guitar interest had stuck its head out again.

Is there anyone else that like (if they could afford it) and would gig with an aluminium guitar ?
Either metal neck, or total metal construction.

Been keeping an eye on this Co. again.

I've been very intrigued by them, just never had one for sale nearby when I had the funds that I could play before buying. Being so unique I would want to play if thoroughly before buying...so I wouldn't buy one online.

Re: What do you think about aluminium guitars ?

I used to have an Abel Axe... it was like about 5/8ths inch think aluminum body that was swiss cheesed and anodized turqoise with a maple neck and rosewood fret board. The tone was meh... it had very strong bell like fundamental notes but it lacked depth and harmonics. It was weird unless you used massive amounts of gain it still sounded clean. But the killer for me was the erogomics... being it was so thin it fit very close to your body.. made me feel like my left arm was pushed back in a chicken wing, couple that with it weighing 12 pounds and it wasnt much fun to play.

Was a cool conversation piece and got a lot of attention. Wish I would have kept it just for how odd it is, I havent seen one in probably 20 years.

The first time i really looked into a metal (neck) guitar was when i saw Slash playing one.
Before that, i knew they existed, but that was pretty much it.
He made me look into the subject !
That was probably 1992/3.

I have a friend that has an electrical guitar jazzmaster and he just finished putting together a partsmaster thing with a Bastin aluminum neck. I haven't played either, I guess they're awesome... I don't know why I posted in here.

Re: What do you think about aluminium guitars ?

I'd be leery about plucking down much money on a metal necked guitar . . . how expensive would a refret be?

Re: What do you think about aluminium guitars ?

While I love alternate materials...does steel or aluminum get hot in the sun? I'm in Florida here, so shiny metal surfaces can melt your skin off- and half of my gigs are outside.

Because King Buzzo has one ?

I don't know. I would think that aluminum by itself would sound kind of thin. Maybe if there were other metals added in some sort of internal strut pattern, such as brass or copper, maybe even iron, to bring out some deeper overtones, then maybe. Though with that kind of construction, weight could easily become an issue.

Being British, the first thing that came to mind was Keith Levene of Public Image Limited.

Re: What do you think about aluminium guitars ?

I love aluminum neck and all aluminum guitars and one of the only guitars I regret selling was an old aluminum neck Kramer that I spent a lot of time really getting right. It was truly a poor mans Travis Bean when I got done with it.

I played one EGC a long time ago now, Kevin was just getting started and was already making a great guitar.

Id love to come across a Veleno one day but those are few and far between these days.

They'd also feel colder than wood when not in the sun. Too unnatural a material for me. Call me old fashioned...
