What do you think? Better to get a good SS amp than a cheap bad tube amp.

Re: What do you think? Better to get a good SS amp than a cheap bad tube amp.

I think the main issue is 'where do you play guitar?' The things to consider is 'what tones do you require, and what kind of volume do you require?'

Once you answer those questions, you can narrow down your search for the perfect rig. I usually shop for the amp that I really need, then go for utmost quality.

Rock/Metal/pop player at home in bedroom or apartment. You should really be looking at modeling amps like the Flextone, Valvetronix, Vetta combo or head/2-12.

Rock/Metal/Pop player who plays at a rehearsal studio, gigs, and occasionally practices at home. A versatile tube amp 50W or less with multiple channels, and some FX. A small cheap SS amp, POD, or Tonelab at home.

Rock/Metal/Pop player who plays at 2000 + capacity venues and rarely plays at home.
50W - 100W versatile tube rig, FX, and everything else necessary for pro situation.

Blues/Roots/Pop player at home. Small tube combos 5W-30W, modeling combo.

Blues/Roots/Pop player at rehearsal studio gigs. Tube combos 18W-60W.
At large gigs, stereo tube combos, 50W tube head/2-12 or 4-12.
