What do you think comes closest

Hi,

What do you think comes closest

in a single coil sized humbucker,

to the tone/output/EQ of a full sized Custom Custom?

thanks

Re: What do you think comes closest

hmm, nothing right off the shelf fits that description

i wonder if a lil screamin demon with an A2 magnet or a JB jr with an A2 magnet would get close ... call or email the custom shop and see what they think ... i bet that would sound great in the right application ... nice prominent mids, with tamed highs ... only thing i'd be concerned about is making sure to retain enough bass

good luck

OK thanks

I noticed on the PDF version of the tone chart (which is far more detailed), the EQ estimates and the output rating for the Custom Custom full size is light on the lows, heavy mids, alot of highs. And the output "high".
The only SC sized that has a "high" output rating is the Hot Rails, with a more balanced EQ sig.

maybe for use in this:

let me ask a second thing then,
which of the Hot Rails, JB Jr., and Lil 59 would you say gives me the best of both worlds, a bit of the humbucker growl while keeping a bit of the Strat character? I'm not worried about low end (we have a bass player)

I remember putting a Lil 59 in my cheap Tele copy and it was really really good. I mean =good=.
Can you tell I'm confused
:smack:
thanks if you can add some opinions.

little 59!

Re: What do you think comes closest

YES I'm starting to think yes more on the Lil 59, due to is "moderate" output !!

???
why not HOT ??
part of the reason I'm thinking of the SC Humbucker is due to my Texas Specials which are "hot". I thought I liked "hot", but maybe I don't. Not in a single coil anyway. But I have practically =zero= experience with single coils.
I just know that the Lil 59 in my Tele copy, (with which I had converted the bridge pickup to be supsended fro the pickguard, strat-style rather than a bridge plate.) cooperated fantastic with my Rivera.. I don't know what thats' about.

Re: What do you think comes closest

OK after full band volume trial today, I found the Texas Special bridge is totally not my thing. Back on the hunt for SC humbucker for Strat Bridge.

I like my amp (Rivera 55w) with the gain about 4, 4.5.
I learned with my Carvin, using a full sized Custom Custom, I could get the sustain and distortion I wanted, and could keep the amp gain knob down. I like it this way.

When I look at the PDF Tone chart, the Custom Custom has mids rated at '7', output "high". The Hot Rails also has mids at '7', output "high". I hope/expect that this output will allow me to keep the gain down on my amp yes?
My good experience with the Lil 59 was before I realized that my amp sounds best and still rocks hard with the gain low. I only discovered this while using the Custom Custom.
The JB Jr. output is rated at "moderate/high"

The new question now is,
for those of you who've tried all three of these in your Strat bridges- is the the JB Jr. closer in output to the Lil 59? Or the Hot Rails?
To define my core tone a little better, its a bit of old school 80's and striving for a little bit of that New Steve Stevens tone.

thanks.

Re: What do you think comes closest

update
so I put in the JB Jr and its close-

but the attack is harsh like a, I don't know, =CERAMIC FRIGGIN MAGNET=?
gaaahhh

I miss my custom custom. I wish I had the body and pickups of my Carvin and the neck of my Strat. :(

anyway- can we change the magnet on a little humbucker SC size??
I saw one reference to it in search,
and one guy said you can, one guy said you can't---- :smack:
thanks

as for a mahnet swap on a LIL pickup, let the custom shop do it, they do it, and you'd be better off letting them pull it apart and re-gluing a new magnet on it w/o brealking the pickup somehow.

Re: What do you think comes closest

The hot rails is probably closest volume wise. The 59 is probably closest tone-wise... but neither are particularly close.

I think you'll save yourself a lot of time and frustration in the long run by routing out your strat body and pickguard for a Custom Custom.

That is what I was thinking... Depending on the year, you could already have a swimming pool route, or at least and HSH routed body.. I would suggest you to buy a HSS pickguard and put the CC in....

Just my 2 cents....

However, I just recently put the Lil 59 in the bridge of my strat and did the spin-a-split mod on my second tone knob... Before I did this, I hardly ever played full on bridge... Now, I can't stay out of it... I love the L'il 59...

Since you seem to be disappointed in you Texas Specials, let me know if you are going to sell them... I'd be interested.. I like the stock pups in my American Strat, but I would also like to try others....

Good luck on your quest...

Re: What do you think comes closest

OK thanks

I knew I shoulda bought the Lil 59. I think I'll wait a few weeks before jumping on that.

as for a new magnet for the JB Jr, I'll forget that, thanks for the info.

putting a full size CC in there, maybe. Although there's something I like about the JB despite my ranting, can't quite put my finger on it now.

Gordon,
for now I'm keeping everything I've got so a TX Specials sale is doubtful. I never know what I'm going to do. The neck and feel of this new guitar is so perfect for me but I'm still befuddled on the pickup & preamp tube adjustments for now.
Tommorrow I could be posting on how I put the TX Special back in and how wonderful it is.
