its what i have been using for recording for the last year and a half.
i play metal, and i have to tell you, that big bottom model is just unreal!
Now that i have a bunch of tube amps i am going to experiment with miking those, but unless it sounds considerably better, im still going to demo with the podxt for ease and quietness!

I think it's great when used straight into AUDIo inputs on Pro Tools.

I like some of the Packs you can download. MANY useful tones and FX sounds. Makes it easy to get many ideas going, such as Plexi, AC30, Fender Bassman, Bogner Uber, Marshall Jube tones which I think are quite usable.

They DO NOT replace Mic-ing and amp, but should you want an Octavia sound and a Matchless DC30 mixed in with your ALREADY Mic'd Marshalls on short notice and low budget - well POD to the rescue.

Great responses guys, and very useful... I wasn't too clear that there were two models: the PODxt, and the PODxt Live. After going to the store today, I realized that the XTL is proly what I am looking for because it can be used both for recording and as a live setup.

Two Questions:

1) Is the XTL as versatile and useful to record live with, in comparison to the PODxt?

2) Is $550USD too much to pay for a brand new one? I live in Korea now, and some things are a bit more expensive.

I have had nothing but horrors trying to record my buddies Bass PODxt Live... since there's no real master output or L/R connectors on it, it's a bitch to work with. I don't think it was made for recording at all.

We always end up with a super quiet signal, or a signal that's all present on the L or R channel, but barely present on the opposite, and that changes based on how high the channel volume is at. Seriousl WTF from me, on that one.

I got my bean used for $180USD... New, they go for 300, with the XTL's at 400.

there was a recent thread about this but i am too lazy to look it up and post the link i just bought the xt last month after having the pod 2.0 for about 5 years or so. i think the amp models sound great. the variac plexi (think van halen I), the hiwatt, and the rectifier models sound fantastic. using it with an mbox and protools is not a problem at all. it will work just fine. i don't think of it as simply a scratch demo or practice device. though opinions vary this unit is a great recording tool. many have said if you want to take the sound to the next level of quality though try running it into some kind of nice tube preamp before it hits your DAW. i haven't tried this yet but the concept seems logical. the xt is a very good buy, especially if you are a metal player!

Weird. This is a non-issue with the normal xt live. The master volume is directly below the line/amp switch and it has the exact same outs/ins as the podxt but with a variax in as well if you wanna use the line6 guitar. So, for the original poster- the podxt has no recording advantages over the podxt live. If you want the flexibility to use it live then get the live version. If it's just for recording or scratch tracks get the bean.
