It looks good...was that a good year for them?

etc etc

just throw advice at me here, i want an old tube screamer and have been waiting for one to pop up...is this worth it do you think?

Re: What do you think of this tube screamer...i want to bid for it???

angus,
from the serial #, it appears similar to my original '83, though I'm not home to check

for some good reference, try ts808.com, and look for his vintage collection

Re: What do you think of this tube screamer...i want to bid for it???

Thanks Curly, the site thinks that this particular serial number of tube screamer could contain the latter TA75558 chip, which from what i can gather is the less sought after chip as the other type of chip, JRC2043, is in the really old "black back" ones and the JRC4558 chip is in some of the other white back ones have in them before they turned back to the TA7558 chip...which if you are still following this confusion is the chip in the pedal im looking at ;)

So what does all that mean?

Re: What do you think of this tube screamer...i want to bid for it???

The seller doesn't have any feedback. I wouldn't bid if I were you. It's not worth the risk of getting screwed out of $200 if the seller decides to take your money and keep the pedal.

The seller lives in my local area luckily, and i got in contact with him and he has agreed to let me come check it out on the weekend so i wont be dealing over the net anyway if i win...ill just pay him in person.

Young angus,

He says in the description that it is the TA 7558 chip. There is a pic somewhere online of an original TS9 circuit board, thats what I sued as a reference when I bought mine on eBay several weeks ago. I think it may be on that TS808 site, but I am not sure. At any rate, it wasnt too hard to find, just do a google search.

In the future, try to get the seller to send you a photograph of the circuitboard, then see if it has the correct chip.

I think the good ones are easily worth $160+, compared to the prices of modded reissues from the big name after market guys. The originals are just warmer and smoother than the modded reissues-a little darker also.

Re: What do you think of this tube screamer...i want to bid for it???

Are you saying that the TA 7558 chip ones are good?

Re: What do you think of this tube screamer...i want to bid for it???

Nope, the JRC4558D is the good chip.

Re: What do you think of this tube screamer...i want to bid for it???

To be quite honest, it doesn't matter too much. I have a few tube screamers, including a TS9 from 1981. I don't recall which chip is in it, but it's ok. Not as nice as my modded TSs though. I'm planning to send this one out to analog man. If it were me, I would just find one in good condition and send it to Mike (or Keeley).

hmmm interesting

what would others here do?

im thinking maybe save the money and get an attenuator which i kinda actually need...?

Re: What do you think of this tube screamer...i want to bid for it???

Tubescreamers....it has been about 14 years since I bought my last one...tried to like it...but it was way to closed in the sound for my taste, still is, I do not like the colouration from those things, they need mods or a treblebooster to come anything near alive...and then you can speculate if is worth the money.

Re: What do you think of this tube screamer...i want to bid for it???

SRV used both, but I got the feeling that he preferred the TS-808.

If I lived "down under", I'd buy a MIJ TS-9 from someone in the USA on Ebay. Then I'd have that seller send it to John and have it turned into the best TS-808 you've ever heard!

Then have John send it to you "down under".

You won't regret it.

One day im gonna have to get full details off you about what you're saying and do that, it sounds great!

Re: What do you think of this tube screamer...i want to bid for it???

:) All I'm saying is to get on Ebay, find a nice made in Japan TS-9 Tubescreamer, have the seller send it directly to Stratdeluxer97 (our buddy here on the Forum: John Spina) have John mod it for you into a TS-808 with the right chip and everything else, and then ask John to send it to you down under. You'll love it. John modded two old TS-9's for me and they sound livlier and just plain better than the $170 TS-808 reissue I have. I think the TS-808 reissue might sound better than an unmodded TS-9, but the STRATDELUXER97 modded TS-9 sounds better than the unmodded TS-808.

SRV used them all. He also had a TS-10 on his board before he passed on.

The vintage Tube Screamer market is insane. They're great pedals, don't get me wrong. But not THAT great.

Yup....I bought an almost-new TS-9 off ebay for $80 U.S. including shipping, had the seller do just what Lew said and send it straight to John, he modded it to 808 specs (he uses original JRC4558's and installs a socket on the circuit board so that you can interchange chips if you wanted something a little different one way or the other) and sent it to me.
You'll save $50 going that route over buying that 80's TS-9 at ebay, and John's work is pure beauty tonewise plus his skill-level is professional, mine is the best boost/dist. pedal on my board....but, I will say that those older ones are supposed to be the sh!t and they usually go for a lot higher than what that opening bid is. You'll have to go with your gut feeling on this one, but you're obviously going to play this pedal like you said and be able to hear it with your axe....so who knows?
I'll never regret having any pedal modded by John (I have 6). Big gobs of Mojo-Tone, baby.
I disagree with the gentleman above....The TS-9 is a great pedal. It's a classic.

My name is Bob, and I approve of this post.

I have a TS9 modded by our forum buddy, and I absolutely love it!

It takes a good valve amp and volume to get the best out of this peal imo, but it's more than worth it to hear the tone!

I used mine for the 1st time at a gig last night and it delivered everything I wanted it to :)

Just my opinion :)
