What do you think? (swirl finish content)

An artist I work with is thinking about adapting her drip/run painting technique to guitars... consider this a bit of market research.

Here's a mock/up example below. Thoughts? Opinions? What would you pay for a finish like this, assuming you liked it enough to buy one and could choose the colors in the work?

I watch youtube videos all the time of people doing that. Reminds me of Vai.

I'd buy one and I'd play one, but not if it added more than $100 - $150 to the price.

And it would have to be a nicely done work of art, deep, rich colors, interesting and appealing swirls and movement to it; not some quick hack splatter job that looks like someone's first high school art project.

CBS also did market research on that. Apparently it was a go:

I like it. A lot.
No idea what'd be a fair price.
But please PM me if she decides to go ahead with the project.

Yeah I remember those too. Having seen the painting that's been superimposed on the guitar in person... it's... a little different. The Vai axes are dip-based swirls. This is a different paint and different techniques.

Agreed. The artist in question is a professional and is very careful about how she controls the movement and color mixing of this style of painting.

Based on your statement, can I assume under $100 would be a fair price?

Will do. We'll probably test this out on a beater guitar just as a proof of concept.

IF i was playing in an 80's hair metal band, or a far out trippy psychedelic band . . . YES !

I can deff see an Ibanez RG (Steve Via any one ?), a Tele or Danelectro in this kinda finish !

I do find it hard to see a Les Paul shaped guitar in a swirly pattern.

And the ultimate :

The only ''problem'' i can for-see is :

. . . if the customer have a certain pattern in mind, and she can not get it remotely close, because, looking at these kinda clips, it is a luck of the draw kinda thing. You have one go - and that is it !

I can image is it pretty IMPOSSIBLE to replicate one job to the other.

Re: What do you think? (swirl finish content)

I personally love these. I do think it's a luck of the draw
Deal. That's what's prevented me from attempting it in my builds. If I knew it would come
Out properly I'd def do it. As for price I would think $100 is a decent up
Price for this type of paint. The paints themselves are not that expensive and the process itself looks easy enough. You don't have to worry about runs and what not in the paint.

Thats why i love those 80's crackle finishes. Just the method behind it guarantees everyone gets something unique and different. Just like the swirls.

How did swampys swirl go in the end'?

Re: What do you think? (swirl finish content)

Is Eerie Dess Swirl and option? That'd be great.

Yeah, basic downside is the element of luck involved with it.

And yeah, 100 USD including the final finish + polish would be pretty fair IMO.
