What Do You Use For Drums And For General Mixing?

I'm looking for a program that I can make drum beats with, and a program that I can do mixing etc. with, like Protools or Cubase. I hear these names thrown around alot, I know Protools is considered the king but it's very pricey, but what do you guys recommend? I'm hoping for economical as in under the $100 mark but I'm open to whatever's out there. I want something that is solid and works, period. Something that does it better than my Cakewalk HomeStudio version 2. As for the drum program thing, I have no idea what is out there, but I had Reason for a short period of time and it was ok. Help a brotha out.

I use my drummer!!! I use GarageBand for mixing and what not. I tried the demo of Mixcraft on my PC laptop and it seemed OKAY for the price. $50 I think. Certainly better than nothing. I suggest try the trial version.

DFHS for drums, Cubase SX3 for all recording/mixing. Various plugs... Waves, Sonalksis, Voxengo, Altiverb, etc.

I've taken to using an old version of Fruity Loops and random wav drum samples on the net. Simple and intuitive, but slightly archaic.

I drop the mixdown of the drums into a Fostex MR-8 to record the bass, guitars, keys, and vox. Then I upload the WAVs into Reaper to edit (compress, eq, reverb impulses, etc.). Most of the edits are done with free plug ins off the net. I take all the final edited instruments and mix those in Reaper. Since my computer is slow, I edit in separate Reaper projects, then mix and master in 2 separate projects. Otherwise, there's too many plug-ins and wav files going on that it starts to get choppy. Sometimes I may sorta hand-mix/ride-the-faders from the mr-8 and re-record that mix into Reaper to generate a final mix that I then "master."

I also have a CD of Groove Monkey drums that I break into for some drum loops too when the mood strikes.

I'd go with Reaper in a heartbeat.

If you buy in the next week, you'll get a free upgrade to 2.0, which has a few improvements to the routing/mix view that will make that program rule even more.

I've got Cubase, and DKFH plugin. I use my midi sequencer to construct the tracks cos I find it more convenient. What's the best bass plugin for Cubase? I can get great drums and weak sounding bass..
