What does a whammy pedal do?

Ok guys, let me explain. I've never ever used an effects pedal of any sort for the past 3 and 1/2 years, which is how long I've been playing. Not even a distortion pedal. I get different amps out of my VGA3. So what does a whammy pedal really do? I know a lot of guitarists use them, but why would you use one if your guitar has a whammy bar? That's what I'm curious about, like Satch, Vai and Malmsteen all have guitars with floating bridges/whammy bars, so why do they use a whammy pedal????

Re: What does a whammy pedal do?

a whammy bar cant raise the pitch of a note 3 octaves. it can't double the note, or harmonise with itself. the red box can though. :headbang:

Re: What does a whammy pedal do?

yeah what he said. it also does a bunch of other koo stuff. listen to some rage against the machine. the whammy pedal use is quite prolific on battle of la. the gorilla radio is a good example of cool sounds it can make, and also voice of the voiceless.

Re: What does a whammy pedal do?

seems like a cool thing, but theyre expensive as hell

Re: What does a whammy pedal do?

Thanks guys. I can't wait to get my hnads on a real tube amp. I can finally get some pedals and really experiment.

matt bellamy uses one frequently, vai i think owns one of the originals as well..

yeah matt bellamy is a quality user of the whammy, hes got skillz.

Re: What does a whammy pedal do?

My old, discontinued boss pitch shifter/delay pedal (PS-3) has an input for an expression pedal . . . would the expression pedal do the same thing as the whammy pedal?

Re: What does a whammy pedal do?

I have an original WH-1, and with proper use it can do lots of useful things...IMO the XP Whammy series, and the reissue WH-1 are junk...they just do not track the same. Most people just endup making noise with them...Matt Bellamy, Tom Morello, Jack White, Dimebag, David Gilmour, Vai, Satch...these guys put it to good use.

Re: What does a whammy pedal do?

Is there any way to get your hands on an originaly WH-1? Or is it just luck and Ebay?

...aggravate fellow band members and annoy the audience.

your best bet is to just luck out and find one in a garage sale or something - anything you see in a guitar store second hand or on ebay is going to cost an absolute fortune for an original - everyone knows just how much they are worth, its the same scenario as the boss CE-1

THis is essentially the reason the Whammy Pedal exists....whether or not an artist uses it correctly/ reasonably is NOT the pedal´s fault ;)

Just like cars: they weren´t designed to kill people, but they do a damn good job of it :saeek:

AWESOME quote :laugh2:

its really an all-dancing pitchshifter IMO - get sub-bass, harmonise lines, do the crazy 'weeh-oh-weeeh!' thing, its all good.. as long as you use it tastefully :)

I think the XP Whammy's are crap, but the reissues are almost arbitrarily labeled 'inferior' because they supposedly don't "track well". FYI: I own a reissue and mine tracks fine. :D

I agree. The guy from this Japanese band called Melt Banana uses the whammy in a pretty awesome way too.
