What does it take to put a Floyd Rose in a Les Paul?

Just a question…. What does it take to retrofit a Floyd Rose ona Les Paul? Can the nut be easily routed for a locking nut bolted through the back? Does the neck need to be reset at a lower angle to place the bridge down where it needs to be (instead of way in the air like a TOM?) I think the Axcess, while looking like a Les Paul from the front, is designed quite a bit differently than a typical LP.

I’d love an Axcess or made to measure but that’s in the stratosphere. Finding a more reasonably priced Les Paul and a good luthier is what I’m mulling…. (Or alternatively a Warmoth, PRS SE or LTD)

900$ for an Epiphone Axcess Lifeson . . . which I bet would be a good bit better than cutting up your typical Les Paul.

Too bad they are discontinued and fetching $1400+ on the used market. Not sure if it’s worth a 50% markup. Also, I’d like something other than honeyburst, I think the Epi is only one color.

Also, I understand that this might be a black LP, because I’m not cutting up a custom shop like below.

So maybe I just need to save and be patient. :chairfall

This is the look I like. (Sorry guys, I know it’s not a lot of your style)

Holy crap! I didn't know that. Hmm . . . wasn't there an ESP LTD with a floyd?

Bruce beat me to it. If you want a functioning Floyd on your Lester, the FRX is the way to go. No drilling as far as I know, not even for the nut. If you want the specific looks of a recessed Floyd, then....

Locking tuners won't work as well as a locking nut, though.

If the whole neck (nut to neck pickup) is setup correctly by an experienced and competent luthier THEY WILL STAY IN TUNE.
I've done it more than once for my picky clients. Locking tuners also allow a proper setting of action at the nut (it always a compromise with a Floyd locking nut), plus string changes are a breeze compared to using a locking nut. ALSO - no weakening of the peghead.

Dave, I love ya - but you are DEAD WRONG on this one. Be wise and admit defeat.

I have been thinking about the FRX Tremolo System from Floyd Rose for my Les Paul Lite. No routing necessary.

I saw that or something similar a year or so ago on one of Steve Stevens signature Knaggs guitars. He was trying it out and said it worked well. That would be the way I would go. I would be too scared to cut into a guitar and have it retrofitted. This seems like a great solution as does buying one that way from the factory.

Would you mind elaborating why? Can't seem to wrap my head around that.... :( I mean, the locking nut has to sit at the correct height, sure. So one either has to remove wood or use a shim underneath. But from there on, the strings are locked in their place, not much to set up there. Or is it beacuase of the radius? If yes, I understand what you're saying, but I gotta add that once I calculated how much difference there is in string height when the Floyd nut is not exactly the same radius vs an exact match. It turned out to be so tiny that I find it to hard to imagine it can impede the setup of the proper action. Given how the strings spread towards the bridge, that much difference can arise from having a fixed raidus on the neck vs the actually compund one of the plane of the strings. Or am I missing something? (I'm NOT arguing, only asking!)

Plus in this specific case, the original nut stays, the locking nut goes behind it, so I am absolutely positive that it wouldn't make a difference with the FRX.
