What Duncan pickups for a LP Standard for early Pearl Jam tone?

What pickups would be good for my Gibson LP Standard to get an early Pearl Jam tone? I'll be playing the LP through a Splawn Quick Rod through a Greenback loaded Mojo 4x12.

59 in the bridge, Alnico2 in the neck, or a phat cat. Nail em'

Re: What Duncan pickups for a LP Standard for early Pearl Jam tone?

depends how old the stuff is
if you're talking nineties, the humbucker pair viewaskew recommended would fit PERFECTLY. if you're talking about the recently recorded stuff, i'd say P90's since they used strats on the last 2 albums, and les pauls on the others

I'd go with either a set of 59s or a 59/JB combo.

Nah, jb wouldnt do it any justice. If you just get an old 80's jap strat, put 3 Classic Stack plus in em, thats there 'fender sound' Put a Phat cat and a 59' in there ( split the 59 aswell ) and you will get there Grungy'twangy sound.

I think one of the guitar players used a Strat on Ten also, I believe the solo on Alive is a Strat, if I remember correctly...

EDIT: it is in fact true, it was a Strat that Mike used. Mike used a reissue strat, a Marshall JCM 800 100w head, a Marshall 4x12" cabinet, and some variety of store bought effect pedal.

Mike McCready used a strat, but Stone Gossard used Les Pauls.

The tone I'm after is their 'Ten' album tone. I know there is alot of strat tones on their, but I'm wanting their humbucker tones. Like the intro to Alive and Porch. Just a fat PAF tone I guess is what I'm after. How do ya'll think a pair of Pearly Gates would do?

Forget about the pearly gates. Go the 59, and then a 59 neck and put Alnico2 magents in it. Get a maxon ts 808 ( modded ) and your good to go. Any Dunlop wah will get you there. Dont need much other pedals then that.
Ive got a guy who is a pearl jam nut like me, but actually has money to buy the gear. Nails it. He took my reccomendations thinking ' hmmm well he is my pal..and i can do the alnico2 mag thing and set it all up myself..'
He was very happy.
All through a Epiphone Les Paul Studio and a JCM 800

This was just asked recently. I would lean toward a pair of Alnico II magnet based humbuckers. Then I would tweak my amp settings or get an equalizer.

Probably not the place to say it, but I read an interview with Stone Gossard in an old guitar world magazine, before VS came out. His les pauls had dimarzio's in them. If i can find the interview i'll post which particular pickups.

Re: What Duncan pickups for a LP Standard for early Pearl Jam tone?

Just looked it up, it was an interview Stone did with Guitar world on his side band brad, just before going back into the studio to work on VS. He said his rig consisted of les paul customs with dimarzio pickups (didnt say which model), He used Peavey classic 50 amp, and for effects, EHX big muff, Boss Chorus and Ernie Ball volume pedal.

Stone said he intended using it on the next Pearl Jam album (VS), though if you go look at giventowail.com, i dont think thats what ended up happening.
I know its not the Ten era tone you were after, but I though as seeing I had dug it out I may as well post for your, or other Pearl Jam fans interest.

Being massive fan myself, I ended up putting 59N and JB in my Epi Les paul, and getting a Marshall TSL60. I hate the 59, and will change it eventually, but im pretty happy playing Alive through that set up.

And like was posted earlier, with the exception of the song "garden" all the rythm work on Ten was played by Stone on a Les Paul, and all the lead by McCready with a strat.

Sorry if i confused the issue.

Drjones has a good point, giventowail.com has some great stuff on there reguarding gear. JB will be 'ok' but a custom custom might be better in the neck if your going that way.
