What exactly is modern tone?

Re: What exactly is modern tone?

I agree with simon, these days there is so much digital modelling technology etc that you can layer so many guitars on top of each other in a recording. Often i find modern sounding stuff is usually because of the amount of new stuff that you can do in the studios. I really cant go past the raw and vintage quality of bands like led zeppelin and hendrix, sabbath etc. Like digital and analog - I like the tone u get from analog better.
Just the simplicity of a guitar and amp with a few stompboxes in between, works so well, if the players give them justice.

Re: What exactly is modern tone?

I think it has more to do with songwriting and production values than any specifics of instrumental tone. Just look at how much old "tone" is sampled in "modern" music. I'm not convinced there is any distinction.

+1

I don't understand why so many people feel compelled to put a label on such things in the first place.

This is a classic example of how "infallible web dogma" begins to circulate.

Re: What exactly is modern tone?

I agree - it's all about the amount of compression and layering of tracks in studio. Most of the bands could pass off as vintage tone back in the day.

The only things I consider modern tones are like.. the Modern Metal, Mesa Boogie, 5150 stuff that simply couldn't happen in the 60s and 70s (or at least.. didnt.. ever..)

Re: What exactly is modern tone?

Ok, like all the albums from Bruce ****enson solo career, especially Adrian's Smith tone on them, is that modern ??? its definately not his Iron Maiden tone, still him, but a world of difference comparing to say, Somewhere in Time. How about Petrucci ? or Rammstein or Stratovarious ??? Today's Lynch and Smith's tones are not modern, at least I don't think they are, just better, more tastefull variotions of their old, that came along with things like Engl, Soldanos, and other new toys. However, EdGUy, Stratovarious, Rammstein, Blind Guardian and Petrucci(I am not DT fan at all) took same toys and made something of new artistic value (not just sonic over-load) with it. I think it has to do a lot more with amps and other effects rather than pups.

Re: What exactly is modern tone?

I see that amps and effects could play a large part in modern tone, but as there are pickups that are advertised as vintage-voiced, then there should also be pickups that are geared towards modern tone, right?

I think so too. Everything play its part.

*edit* The guy in my avatar (Rolf Kasparek from Running Wild) uses Gibson Explorers with PAFs through Engls. I think of its tone more vintage than mdern. It has a modern twist though.

When he plugs his Duncan Distortion loaded axes you hear the difference.
