Fender seems to play a big role in the garage sound ala arctic monkeys. Which one is the best to go for. I don't know alot about fender amps and a friend of mine wants to get a good amp for garage type music.

Well I think Fender Hot Rods are used for some of those bands (i know bloc party). But brightest clean amps with a little grit tend to be good. Like VOX ac30's or similar. Thats for the british garage/indie/post-punk revival tone.

Homeboy from Arctic Monkeys uses an Orange Rocker 50 2x12 combo.

To answer your question tho: All Fender tube amps are great for garage rock...mostly depends on your volume needs and how much weight you wanna deal with.

Anything around the 1k mark? I should mention that he's young and works at a grocery store. Basically enough cash for a simple yet effective setup.

Re: What Fender Amp For Garage?

I have a 68 Fender Bassman head...it's silverface but it still has the blackface circuit. I got it for a really great deal back in 02...look on eBay for amps from that era for the best deals on Fenders.

The thing with 'garage tone' is that it's specifically lo-fi. You could make something cheap sound awesome with enough energy and heart in the rockin.

Thats EXACTLY it. Most of the so called "garage" bands aren't trying to be gear specific or tone fanatics, they are just using what's out there, or should I say, whats out there thats not high end boutique or ultra high gain metal type amps.

Fender's, Orange, Ampeg, Vox etc all would work just fine.

The "sound" is actually a lack of a certain sound, if that makes sense

If you were playing this style and you wanted a distortion or overdrive pedal to stomp on what would you choose? I know the jekyl and hyde is what the strokes use, I read somewhere that arctic monkeys use rats.

a pair of Super Six Reverbs with an LP Special...that should do it.

In my Punk Band (Bad Luck #13) I use a Solid Gold Sound Labs "High Octane" pedal in front of my Bassman. It is a TS-9 based pedal, but much better! We play our own stuff, plus Sex Pistols, Devil Dogs, Von Zippers, Anti-Nowhere League, Dead Boys, Ramones, etc..This pedal has that "Old School" 70's-ish punk tones.. Here's a link to the company's site..Check them out! (Each pedal is hand built to your specs too): http://www.solidgoldfx.com/

Re: What Fender Amp For Garage?

Look at laney's (VC series), cheaper fenders (hot rod series etc), Vox custom classics. should get in the ball park. Maybe even a second hand orange or tiny terror if you can find a cheap cab. Look at any 'distortion' pedal that isn't emulating an amp and u should be fine. Look at rats or maybe a ds-1. But i find the best garage tones are lower wattage el84 amps cranked. Heck I find the best tones are el84 amps cranked till just below breakup!
