What fret size does everyone prefer?

Re: What fret size does everyone prefer?

i dont know, whatever is on my guitar right now seems alright to me. I guess if ever re fret my axe it will be with dunlops closes to what i have right now. I think tis medium jumbo on mines i belive...not sure...

Re: What fret size does everyone prefer?

6105.. I have this wire in all my Strats. My SG,LP, and 335 are stock.

Re: What fret size does everyone prefer?

For me it depends on what do you want the guitar to do.

I have medium jumbo on a Guild guitar and the feel so nice to my hand. They are very comfortable. And I have a tall and wide oneson a home made one and they make the fretboard feel like a railroad track. But they are so fun to play with: Big bends, vibrato, tapping... etc.

Again, it depends what you want to play with the guitar.

Re: What fret size does everyone prefer?

I've only played two guitars with Extra Jumbo frets, and I really liked them, but I also like Jacksons, which use Jumbo right? I think if I were using numbers it would be a choice between 6100 and 6105. I'd like to try the 6000 too.

The Ibanez SZ520 I have now has Medium frets, I don't know the number... last year they started shipping them with Jumbo frets :rocket: ... naturally I was a little annoyed because I like bigger frets that make bending and all of that easier. *sighs* But it's still fun to play.

Re: What fret size does everyone prefer?

the taller and thinner the better....almost scalloped feel...one of these days Im gonna have to try a scalloped neck. When I get my variax im gonna get a
warmoth neck with stanless steel 6115 fretwire, I think that should satisfy me.

Re: What fret size does everyone prefer?

When I had my Les Paul Deluxe refretted I told the luthier to go with stainless steel and for them to be as big as he can get. He asked about how SRV used to use bass frets. I told him that if he could get them in stainless steel then to go with them.

The upside is that after two years the guitar still plays EXACTLY like it did the day it left the shop. Wear is absolutely minimal. I can't even see the tiniest hint of wear or crowning on them anywhere.

The downside is that with 11's on there the thing is a feat of strength to play for me. I know when I pick it up I'd better be on my game and I'd sure as hell be ready for an ass-kicking if I'm not. It's not the guitar I go to when I'm looking for a nice easy axe to play.

With that said I would do the same thing again in a heartbeat. I love having that option with my axes and I love the fact that it's going to be forever before it will need another refret.

Re: What fret size does everyone prefer?

About 10 years ago i went thru a phase were i liked medium-tall sized frets... I even had a Jacksons huge frets taken out of it and had 6105's put in as i liked the narrow but tall profile... so i ended up using 6105 on almost all of my guitars... since then i have bought a few MIM guitars and i don't like that small wire... one MIM strat i have has had a fret dress already and they feel so small! These days i'm leaning back to the huge fret wire again... ever since i picked up a few more Jacksons/Charvels i'm digging that almost Scalloped feel!!!

I have a pound of 6105 wire still in my closet from stewmac.... been wanting to order the 6100 stuff.... I need to refret a Epi Les Paul and i was thinking 6100 maybe cool on that POS lp copy....

Re: What fret size does everyone prefer?

uh......big. i dont know specifically what number, but ill guess 6100 is ideal

Re: What fret size does everyone prefer?

Wow, the resurection of a 17 month old thread!

Well, since it's already at the top, I like both the 6105 and the 6150. The 6150 is a bit wider, but the two are about the same height. I wish I had the guts to try the 6100 on a project, but those things are HUGE.

Re: What fret size does everyone prefer?

I like the 6105's best. Once you get used to them it's hard to go back to shorter, wider frets. The down side with the 6105's is the fret wear. In six months time they show flat tops. That's why Ive been going to the 6150 more and more.

I notice a lot of you guys like stainless frets. How does that effect the tone? Does it make it too bright? Is this a rosewood only alternative? It sure would be nice to have frets that don't wear out so fast.

I've been wanting to try stainless steel's on a Warmoth neck.... I don't wear my frets out that much as i tend to use many different guitars and i can go 10 years without having to dress some of them... But the Stainless frets have my interest up...... now if they had Stainless 6000 or 6100's i'd be trying that for sure... but as i said above i like the 6105's as well so maybe i'd like stainless

Re: What fret size does everyone prefer?

The Dunlop 6000's on my Strat are incredibly comfortable to play. :headbang:
