What frets do I want?

I`m planing on getting a new neck from Warmoth for my Strat. I`m undecided on Medium Jumbo or Jumbo frets. My Wolgangs,Axis`,Teles and Strats have all had medium jumbo frets and I`ve liked them but would I gain anything as far as playabilty if went to jumbos? I play hard rock riffs, some EVH,Jake E Lee, Zakk Wylde type licks and some SRV type blues riffs and licks. I like fairly low action and use .10 strings and .09s on another Strat.

I don't think you would gain anything from going to bigger frets, expecially since you're used to the medium jumbos.

It's really all personal taste. I have a Dean Hardtail with Jumbo's, and the rest of my guitars have Med Jumbo's. I don't mind the Jumbo's, and it sure makes string bending a breeze. However, I have a pretty firm grip when it comes to chording, and I do notice that I go sharp in some situations because the frets are so high.

Overall, I think Med Jumbo's are best for all around work.

dunlop 6105s are incredible (the ones that are 0.055" tall, not the warmoth 6105s)
I never liked them when I demo-ed them in a music store.
But when I got my Wolfgang, after about an hour of playing them, I was completely won over.

I love the 6150's. The are fairly wide and on the tall side but, they are not too huge. It would be a good comprimise between the 6100 and the medium jumbo. When I play 6100's it just feals way too tall.

6105's for me. Same thing happened when I got my wolfgang. I never really paid attention to fret's untill I got this guitar.

Re: What frets do I want?

i have small fret guitars, medium and rather large on my jem. the larger frets seem easier to play lead on, notes take less pressure and are clearer and they tend to give the strings a much lighter feel, but prefere smaller or medium for playing rhythm on, my squier strat has cheapy small low frets and its my favourite guitar for playing rhythm and general clean stuff with but i find the strings to feel heavier and i need to be more precise and fret notes harder when playing lead compared to my other guitars. but like others have said its down to personal choice, i dont personally have a favourite because i like different for different types of playing.

Re: What frets do I want?

Dunlop 6100s for all of my "player" instruments, with the exception of my Flying V, which has 6000s (Now THERE's some railroad tie type of frets!).

I've been wanting to try that 6000 fret!!! I like the huge frets in my Jacksons but on a Warmoth neck i ordered 6105's.... That was a mistake as i wish it had bigger frets... It's cheaper to order new neck then refret these days.....

order the new neck then sell the old one, save even more money.

Re: What frets do I want?

Well i could sell the neck but to tell the truth the sound of my Warmoth will stop me from selling it... It's weird but 10 years ago i liked Med frets and now i love them huge!

I have short story on some interesting Frets. I put together a tele out of a bunch of odd ball parts i collected from different repair shops.... The body is an Ash Peavey body and i found an odd Fender neck that fit it pretty good. The Fender was an Electric shaped neck off one of those acoustic guitars shaped like a strat Fender is selling.... Anyway the thing is great to play believe it or not and it was just garbage stuff from shops around town! That Fender neck has the tallest but skinniest frets i have ever seen..... as wide as a 6105 but 2 times as tall almost.... Odd fret wire!

Re: What frets do I want?

Go with the stainless steel frets...they make two sizes that are big without being quite as tall as a traditional jumbo.
