Does anyone know what guitar/amp/pickups they used for live tracks like I want you to want me, its not my favorite song but I like that open tone they get.

Re: What gear do the guys from cheap trick use?

Rick Nielson uses Hamer guitars exclusively to the best of my knowledge. I've seen them live about a dozen times, they're a blast! Last time I saw them I couldn't see what kind of amps Rick was playing through, but if he's using Hamers, there's a good chance some of them are loaded with Duncans.

Everything they do is fairly vintage sounding, so I'd guess lower output PAF style pups.

Rick Nielson has been playing Hamers forever. He has an endorsement deal with Rivera amps.

Here's a link and an exerpt from an interview:

RW: What amps are you currently using?

RN: My old set-up is now rack mounted. It includes my souped-up Fender Deluxes(Paul Rivera), Blues Devilles, Checkerboard Rivera's, and Sound City cabinets (I've had them since 1968). I'm also using some Premier Amps, some 60's Orange combos, a pile of 50's Fender Tweeds, a Nielsen Amp (found in Seattle) and a 60's Vox AC30.

RW: How do you have the controls set?

RN: Master volume on 7 and Channel volume on 7. Treble on 10, Bass on 3. Shure wireless through a Whirlwind Multi-selector into a passive splitter.

RW: What effects are you using, and can you tell us the chain they are in?

RN: I'm only using a 60's Vox WaWa pedal. I have other pedals that I also use from time to time when I'm recording at home or on the road.

Last time I saw them, Rick played several guitars, including the 5 neck Hamer, a flying V and 2 Les Pauls. He played through those 2 modified silverface Fender Deluxe amps, and there was a beat up Marshall stack just for show.. it had a spotlight in the speaker cabinet :D
Robin played a Custom Hamer also. It was tele style, with a surf green kind of color. He played it through a Sovtek Mig 50 head with a 4x12 HiWatt speaker cabinet.

I have seen the band a few times and I am pretty sure that Rick was playing through a Marshall head at one of the previous concerts.

Re: What gear do the guys from cheap trick use?

Rick plays every guitar under the sun and quite a few amps as well.

He's been using a lot of Gibson Goldtones lately and he has one of the largest guitar collections in the world, not nearly as exclusive to Hamer as you would think though he will forever be attached to them for obvious reasons.

His main guitar is a 1958 LP Burst that he has had since the late 60's, he's used it on every album he has ever done. He uses a lot of the newer RI LP's and the Custom Shop usually sets him up pretty well.

Live "I Want You.." from what era? Budokan? Likely a modded Marshall through the SC cabs. Guitar...I'll have to watch it again and see what he is using, an Explorer sticks in my mind though. If you post on the Cheaptrick.com message boards I am sure you'll get verse and chapter the equipment for Budokan from someone, maybe Rick?

RICK RULES!!!
