What genre

Re: What genre

My reference to meds was figurative and I'm not aware of any psychological problems you might have! So sorry! And you should be glad to have someone to attack your opinion. How will you know if your opinion has any merit if you never have to defend it?

When a scientist comes up with a theory does the rest of the scientific community just take their word for it at face value? Hell no! This is how we improve ourselves. By withstanding the tide of criticism! If I didn't give a damn then I wouldn't say anything to you!

I'm grateful when people attack me! Because it forces me to rethink my position. When I find a position that I can not defend with a counter argument then I know that I must re-evaluate my thought process. A true friend doesn't kiss your butt! Rather they challenge you to become better!

I love everybody! :chairfall

I got ya now...I posted a while back in the off topic room about a certain mental illness and I was a bit worried about what people might think of me as a person. But i guess I have to be ready for the people who attack me. It's kind of hard with a mental illness to defend yourself on something related to the illness without saying "it's because I have a mental illness".

Anyway I'm not too good at fighting off criticism. Most of the time I'm kind of the go into my shell kind of kid....until I explode, which you just looked at. It's not that bad but certain things just trip my trigger I guess. Personal issues in specific.

BTW I've been doing nothing but trying to understand harmonies since the day you gave me that amazing post and I still have no idea how the heck it works. :smack: I sort of understand it on paper and I've figured out how some of the chords sound but again I have no idea how it fits into certain genres. Or how to use it with rythms to fit it into those genres. If you could shed some light on it, that would be amazingly cool. I realize it takes time but I have no clue where to start.

Thanks
-Marc

Re: What genre

Every life carries with it a burden. To live is to suffer. None will escape this one profound truth. But where there is suffering there is also great joy. Learn to embrace life in its totality. Embrace all that life has to offer good and bad. Because life in its totality is good! It is an adventure well worth the taking!

Listen to your CDs and try to hear what the guitar player is playing. Start with playing the rhythm parts in the song. To do that, you need to figure out which chords the player is using.

In pop music the bass player usually plays the root notes of the chords. This should be your first clue. Therefore, start out by trying to play the bass line. Once you have the bass line figured out then you can see which notes in that line have the strongest emphasis in each measure. Usually the first note in the measure that the bass player is playing will tell you the letter name of the chord for that measure. This is not always the case but it is a good rule of thumb for most pop.

So I'm guessing that if the first note the bass player plays in the current measure is A, then there must be some kind of A chord there. My next task is to figure out if that chord is major, minor, augmented or diminished. So I rewind to the part in question and I strum an A major chord on the measure and beat in question. If it sounds hash then I'm probably on the wrong track. At that point I try an A minor chord. The probability is that one will sound better than the other.

Pick the chord that sounds the best in that place in the music and continue analyzing in this fashion. If the chord was simply a major or minor triad then your work is done. However, most pop music will incorporate at least 7th in the harmony. So take the chord you have chosen and add a 7th. Play it with the CD. Does it sound any closer? If you chord is a major chord it could possible have a minor 7th (dominant 7th type) or a major 7th. If the chord you chose was a minor chord then it could simply be a min 7th chord or it could be a minMaj 7th chord. Do this as you follow the bass line. As the bass line should give you the key hints as to which chords are played were.

thanks a lot for the great info

Re: What genre

I realize what you guys are saying now and I agree with it. It's just such a horrible idea to look back and realize I've wasted a good 2 or 3 years of guitar playing and have to start a couple of years of experience back :(

since you're 14 and have plenty of time, just be glad you're changing perspective relatively early :)

almost everyone on this forum is an "omniscient and omnipotent adult" that I should fear deeply. Since adults are better than kids at everthing then why should adults even consider my opinion, even talk to me?

I know you want to disown that whole statement, but for the record, I don't think of you as a kid, and if I did it wouldn't affect my judgements of you for the negative at all. I get along better with kids typically anyway :laugh2: Maybe part of that is not talking to kids like they're kids either... But sorry if I came across as a know it all. I tend to do that with adults :laugh2:

yeah this whole "you muust play covers" **** is only semi-true. yes its a great way to learn other styles n ****, but dose nothing to build your own style, and really, memorising a tab dosnt teach you that much about music theory.

it totally does if you know what to look for, and study it.

Eventually you develop your own style through the filter of others. Don't pretend you can develop anything in a vaccuum ;) I genuinely think this is something really important... Think of it as learning a language. You can express yourself in grunts and be "original". But it becomes so much more beautiful when you're able to translate it into the frame of a language :laugh2:

Re: What genre

And another thing! If you're pissed then that's OK damn it! I think most of the time our kids are on meds is because some lame ass so called professional told them and their families that they shouldn't be feeling certain emotions. That's BS! You're a human being damn it! So if it doesn't make you feel "positive" or if it makes you angry then you shouldn't feel it?! BS!

As long as your not hearing voices telling you to harm yourself or someone else you're OK in my book! I'm no medical professional but I know enough to say that you have every right to feel pissed if someone is treating you badly! So you don't have to apologize to me! OK?

As long as you can control your behavior and not harm yourself or others then what's the friggin problem? If you don't agree with me then challenge me! Your not doing me any favors by agreeing with everything I say. Adversaries make me better! They keep me straight! I don't gain anything by being around butt kissers. You don't have to shrink in my presence! The water feels fine! Just dive right in!
