What goes with a JB

Hello all! I have an Ibanez gio HSS style strat. With a JB humbucker in the bridge. I wish to replace the 2 stock single coils but have no idea of what to replace them with. They are very weak and do not pair well with the JB. I use this particular guitar at church for worship rock and at home from classic rock to metal. What are your suggestions for the 2 single coil replacements?

Thanks!

Re: What goes with a JB

Answer - Whatever you want.

Anything COULD go with it, depending on what you want to do.

Do you want fat metal neck leads? I'd put a Hot Rails in the neck. Do you want to play stratty blues leads, or cleaner rhythms? Maybe a Cool Rails. Or just standard clean humbucker style rhythm, - a lil' 59. Is the guitar dark? Perhaps a lil' Demon.

I'll call Hot rails / cool rails not knowing anything. That would make a decent everything axe that can hang with a JB.

with a JB, if you like rock to metal, listen to Ozzy’s Bark at the Moon and Ultimate Sin and see if that tone works for you. If so try Dimarzio SDS-1s

Beer, girls with enough makeup to trick you only once, child support.

Oh not the results of JB usage? I have a Suhr Aldrich which is close and am waiting on the Satch Track to arrive. I considered the pro track and hot rails too. Look there for heavy tonez. I personally would keep a real single coil in the middle or at least a cruiser or light rails there.

For lighter tones look at Andy Timmons.

Welcome to the forum!

My guess is that you don't want it to sound like traditional singles..those types of pickups won't balance volume-wise with the JB anyway. You might look at either 2 Quarter Pounds, or even a Hot Rails & Cool Rails combo.

Re: What goes with a JB

Not too sure about the Hot Rails, it'd be more about competing with the JB than complimenting it... cool if you're torn between two fave bridge pups, sure, but not really doing anything to give you middle pickup strat sounds or an interesring HS mix in position 2

Also, JB covers the at home metal needs pretty well, but classic rock and worship could use some tonal variety and classic strat options perhaps

Also, 3 pricey duncans into a cheapie gio is perhaps throwing good money after bad. Decent affordable singles or whatever used brandname stacks he can find cheap on ebay or craigslist would be a better idea imho.

It is actually a good guitar. new electronics. the tuners could use an upgrade but the feel and play-ability are actually really nice. but i agree with the tonal variety. i have an Ibanez 7 string loaded with SD Black Winter pickups. and a 1999 Mexican made fender 5 string jazz bass with SD quarter pounders. so i am more than covered metal wise. lol. i just hate the huge volume drop on the stock single coils and they are very very thin sounding. so that is why i'm looking for 2 good single coils, that pair well tone wise and doesn't have a HUGE volume drop. some drop is expected but i don't need it to cater to metal. The 6 string is my all around versatile and my 7 string is my balls to the wall metal machine.

ps i am playing thru a Fender Mustang IV 2x12. so i have loads of tones to choose from amp wise and i am happy with the amp. just finishing this 6 string and then guitar wise other than better tuners for my 6 and 7 strings i am done with upgrades... for now lol

more versatile is my aim. i have an ibanez 7 string with SD black winter pickups so im good on the metal front. probably looking for something that pairs well tonal wise that is good with light to moderate overdrive. since i have the JB to switch to for roaring tone something more classic would be nice. i know there will still be a volume drop but currently it is a HUGE volume drop and very very thin sounding. it is a maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, and basswood/poplar body. heavy in weight. traditional tremelo that has 5 springs to make it like a hard tail.

The Hot Rails neck pickup doesn't sound like or, have the power of, the Hot Rails bridge pickup. So I still stick by it.
