What guitar did you learn to play on?

Let it B
My brother came up this weekend and we were reminiscing about the multitude of guitars we have both owned over the years. He and I very different in our needs and tones. He's very much a 50s R&R and Country type guy who plays really heavy gauge strings and doesn't play much lead work- in fact he related to me he is just starting to work on string bending..yes..just starting to work on string bending. Keep in mind he is 47 years old and has been playing since he was about 12. Think Buddy Holly chordal/chord fragment lead work and thats my bro.

Although I enjoy and noodle around on many styles (and have a big affection for my R&R roots as my brother does) of course I've run the gamut of heavy rock of the 60s 70s, and some 80s. Although I'm a sucky lead player, I always was into the "flash" of lead playing. I'm more of a riff & power chord guy than complex chords other than some cowboy chords.

The interesting thing is we have one very common denominator-we both started out on my Dad's guitar. A 1957-ish ES-125 (full size body). My brother still owns it. I have no idea how much it's worth but he will never get rid of it, other than to give it to me when he passes on, and I will keep it in the family as well. This thing has a KILLER sounding P90 in it, Braz board that almost looks like Ebony and a HUGE neck with small-ish frets. Great for chords, but man will it kill your fingers playing leads on it. Full of mojo as it just rings out acoustically.

This not my Dad's but just like it

Now *MY* first guitar was a POS Dean import with flames, 2 humbuckers and a crapass Kahler copy that would never stay in tune.

So what did everyone else learn to play on? any cool vintage pieces? or particularly craptastic not cool pieces like my first guitar?

Re: What guitar did you learn to play on?

I learned to play guitar on my Squier strat..which is currently sitting on my stand with a new Maple/maple neck and waiting for new pickups.

Re: What guitar did you learn to play on?

My first guitar I learned on was cheap $80 Kay dreadnought acoustic my dad got me at a local music shop. It didn't sound half bad. It lasted me all through high school and I still played it even after getting an electric. Eventually I donated to my high school's guitar class program. It was a cheap POS but it got me started.

My mom originally got me a first act like this...

but I didn't like that guitar very much.... I got this one a couple years back and this was the first guitar I really felt like was a guitar.

Re: What guitar did you learn to play on?

A cheap Epiphone Strat.
Tried to refinish it, it went very wrong. The frets are so worn it's unplayable at this point.
It's currently dismantled inside a gigbag. No point in selling it, it's worthless.

Two of my friends and I all started pickin' on one's dad's old strat copy electric that only had 4 rusted strings on it. After a few weeks he got a fresh set of strings for it. That got us started.

Then I bought some "yard sale special" off of an older buddy for $10. The brand name was Global. The tuning keys were broke which cost me another $15 for a cheap set. After I decided I was going to stick with it I stepped up to a Squire strat. I'd have to say I developed most of my fundamental skills on the Squire. I still have it and get it out once in a while.

Re: What guitar did you learn to play on?

A Lark 100 Acoustic. Sold it in college. Mom had a cow like it was a Martin or something.

Re: What guitar did you learn to play on?

A piece of crap old Harmony Stella. The tuners hardly turned. The bridge would move around and the fret board was slightly concave making a full barre for a beginner absolutely impossible. Not mine but a far as I can remember this is what she looked like.

I beat on it for about 2 years before getting this old girl.

That was a happy happy day!

Re: What guitar did you learn to play on?

The first guitar that I learned to played on was my Dad's Ovation Ultra acoustic.

Re: What guitar did you learn to play on?

10$ Classical guitar. I sold it after playing 4 months and keeping it on the shelf of 12months. It was the single piece of instrument that I have sold and never touched a classical guitar ever since.

Re: What guitar did you learn to play on?

Apart from a really terrible acoustic my first guitar that was actually playable was an Avon Les Paul copy and I use 'copy' in the loosest sense of the word. It kind of looked like an LP from a distance. It had a bolt on neck that wobbled from side to side and the 'Humbuckers' were actually really crap single coils in disguise. Nevertheless, it was good enough to learn on and I actually played rather a lot of gigs with it. I know where it is (gave it away years ago) but I have no desire to be re-united with it.

Re: What guitar did you learn to play on?

1974 Yamaha FG-160 (Martin D28 knock)

It had terrible action and was muddy.

BUT within the past 10 years, it has "come 'round the bend," and now it's action is perfect, and it sounds amazing.

I am astounded at how much it has changed. I have no idea why it did, or how, or anything, but it did it pretty much on its own (with a little truss rodding here and there from me) and now it kicks ass.

Re: What guitar did you learn to play on?

A Fender Bronco which I bought in 1973 and kept until 1982. To this day, I kick myself in the ass for selling that guitar. With today's Vintage market, I'm sure I could probably get around 8-900 dollars for it, which would be enough to get a new Gibson LP Studio.

Re: What guitar did you learn to play on?

I learned on my Dad's beat up Yamaki acoustic (looked almost exactly like this):

Used the same stings for almost a year too.

Re: What guitar did you learn to play on?

An Alvarez Regent that my brother had gotten for Xmas a few years earlier, but never learned to play. I had been playing bass on and off for about 5 years at that point and couldn't make sense of the top two strings...so I took them off. For the first year that I played, I only used E-G. It was great: C, C7. C9...all the same chord!

Re: What guitar did you learn to play on?

My first was a Lotus LP just like this one. I paid $80 out of a pawn shop. It was a flaming POS. I got sentimental at one time and started looking for another and people want crazy money for them now. POS then I guess is "vintage import" now.
