My brother came up this weekend and we were reminiscing about the multitude of guitars we have both owned over the years. He and I very different in our needs and tones. He's very much a 50s R&R and Country type guy who plays really heavy gauge strings and doesn't play much lead work- in fact he related to me he is just starting to work on string bending..yes..just starting to work on string bending. Keep in mind he is 47 years old and has been playing since he was about 12. Think Buddy Holly chordal/chord fragment lead work and thats my bro.
Although I enjoy and noodle around on many styles (and have a big affection for my R&R roots as my brother does) of course I've run the gamut of heavy rock of the 60s 70s, and some 80s. Although I'm a sucky lead player, I always was into the "flash" of lead playing. I'm more of a riff & power chord guy than complex chords other than some cowboy chords.
The interesting thing is we have one very common denominator-we both started out on my Dad's guitar. A 1957-ish ES-125 (full size body). My brother still owns it. I have no idea how much it's worth but he will never get rid of it, other than to give it to me when he passes on, and I will keep it in the family as well. This thing has a KILLER sounding P90 in it, Braz board that almost looks like Ebony and a HUGE neck with small-ish frets. Great for chords, but man will it kill your fingers playing leads on it. Full of mojo as it just rings out acoustically.
This not my Dad's but just like it
Now *MY* first guitar was a POS Dean import with flames, 2 humbuckers and a crapass Kahler copy that would never stay in tune.
So what did everyone else learn to play on? any cool vintage pieces? or particularly craptastic not cool pieces like my first guitar?
