I was lucky enough to start on a decent instrument. A friend who was working
for Seymour put me in touch with Kevin (Seymour's VP of engineering), who
had a Ripper for sale. My memory is a little foggy on the price, as this was 30
years ago, but I think I bought it for $300 with a Gibson HSC.

I started with a Washburn X something superstrat. Very nice guitar all things considered. After 10 months or so I managed to buy my first Stratocaster. Sold the Washburn last year.

Plywood body and fretboard (dyed black); neck is some kind of mahogany, huge D shape; plastic bridge. Heavily used - some of the glue joints have given way and the tuning pegs are totalled. From an idyllic era when there was no gas and musicality was paramount.

My first guitar was an Acoustic that my Mom bought me at Sears for $20.00. I played that thing until it couldn't be played anymore.

My first Electric was a Hagstrom II. It was originally painted like Clapton's fool SG. I stripped off all the paint with lighter fluid & again played it until I sold it(I regret selling it though). I need the funds to buy my Jaguar which was a 63. Then that was stolen so I bought my 68 SG. I still have the SG.

I learned to play on a guitar like this.... a Harmony sears catalog special.... it sounded about this big too!
I earned it by diggin up mesquite trees in the back yard.... $2 per stump.... thats cut the tree down... dig the hole around... about 6 feet... axe the roots down to the taproot... about 4-6 feet deep. cut it out and fill the hole back up..... for $100 guitar I busted my ass!

Man..... glad those days are over ugh!

I played a crappy little "Global" Acoustic. It definitely toughened up my fingers, but I'm glad I've retired it.

My first good guitar, which I consider to be the guitar I learned the most on, was practically stolen from a kid who got a brand new Carvin in 1985 for Christmas. I traded him an NJ Series BC Rich Stealth for it. It was the guitar featured on the front of the 1985 Carvin catalog.

It's this exact red one. I installed double black JB/59 in it. My first Duncans. I got rid of it in 1991, because I was onto Gibsons and Fenders by then. It was a great guitar, and I kind of wish I'd kept it just for nostalgia sake.

I first learnt on a nylon string acoustic that I borrowed intermittently from a guy I grew up with. Then I got my own steel string acoustic. It was given to me by the parents. It was terrible but it sufficed until the next guitar I got. :cool2:

1981 Fender Lead ll. Smaller Strat type body, and nice neck. 2 Fairly high output single coils. I changed out the guard, and put in a single Super Distortion. Got some good tones from that set up.

Ha! My brother had one of those when we were growing up. I remember it having strings like tarnished old piano wires. I had to stand on them to fret a note, kind of like cocking a crossbow. I wouldn't say I learned anything on it.
